Default Mixing fuel/octane

My car is supposed to be fed on nothing less than 98 and usually only fill up with Vpower, but with the petrol hikes over the last 2 days I am being more and more tempted by Sainsburys 97 which is 10p a litre less than V power.

V power is 99 so if I do half a tank of V power and half on Sainsburys is there any reason why this shouldnt be ok? Would keeping it all Sainsburys make a difference? It might sound like an obvious and slightly **** question but I want to make sure Im not missing anything here.

Can't see why anyone does this, 10p x 50 Ltrs = £5 more per tank, why would you wanna sacrifice performance and safety and risk knock for the sake of 5 bucks not worth it in my opinion!

If it does indeed risk performance and safety. In theory it shouldnt make any difference so its a free £5.
This was the answer I was looking for but I dont understand the reason. Why do you think it would be bad?

SRSport,
It entirely depends what you car has been mapped for. If it's a standard and original map, it will make little to no difference mixing those two fuels or running 100% on Sainsburys SUL. However, if it was mapped for VPower and you change to that SUL, it may cause issues.

If your car is tuned for VPower then that's what must be used. The higher octane is needed to prevent detonation which will distroy your engine. If you drove off boost as in ZERO boost you would get away with it short term but why would you want to drive a Scooby like that?

Christ !, the ecu will cope with a variation of 1 RON, when fuel used to be cheap, I still put the cheap stuff in during the winter, when I couldn't use the 400 bhp anyway.

All I "felt" was slightly less vicious acceleration.

All IMHO.

P.S. if both are nearby use a 50:50 mix if you can be bothered.

I used to have a hawkeye sport but the car Im referring to is a Mercedes 2.0 Turbo. It has been mapped as standard at the factory line to 98. It states that it can take 95 but only for a short distance driving gently.

dunx, thats a good point about driving in winter, thanks.
