Starting point for a hill climber.

Starting point for a hill climber.
Hi all,
As some of you know I'm looking to build a hill climb car. I was going to use my newage wrx as a starting point but I'm already fighting a loosing battle as the shell weighs a lot more than a classic.
So to my next question, where is a good starting point? Do I go for a well maintained 2000 STI, type R or even an RA? Although my budget for a car would be around 4k I reckon so maybe not an RA.
I realise ill be striping most of the bits out but even I know a good engine is a good place to start. What engine would you suggest out of the box? I'll be looking initially for 400bhp or there abouts.
I've seen a nice 2000 STI on pistonheads with 61k, well maintained and it's an import. The guy is looking for 3.6k which sounds good, just want to be sure it's good for purpose.

Thanks in advance.

Type r i would go for mate. To keep costs down I would go for newage bottom end put sti 3 onwards heads on perfect for 400 I'm gonna be running hopefully near 400 on my standard box and internals on my type r this month so il let u no if engine survives dyno lol. Is 4 k just for car or whole project? Def a classic u want tho any classic shell will do really I think. The money gonna be in roll cage ect u need propa welded in one for hill climb I think?

I competed last year in a V4 Type R in road going class (405bhp!) you don't need a cage although I did have one along with extinguishers.
It was fairly tail happy but the most pain in the **** thing was having seats & harnesses & not being able to get in the back to adjust them or change fuel pump etc! The access is poor without the rear doors.
I'll use a 4 door next time with no dccd

Personally it was a bit of a faff, trying various settings for launch & then trying to wind it back before the 1st corner so you can get round!
My 0-100ft launches were quicker with an open diff in both dry & wet conditions so I just left it open in the end all the time.
Engine had standard internals but did get smokey after just a couple of events with ALS too.
The gearbox was a V6 box (Banny's old one) & took all the punishment I could give it - launching in 1.5 seconds, quicker than a lot of the single seater lads.
Be warned, it is addictive though - I paid £5k for the car & it ended up @ £13k within a few months!
Have a go, you'll be surprised how well you do!

I red your write up on your build, great reading. The car looks great. Mine is definitely going to be a work in progress but I'm in no rush and I'm sure I've got a lot to learn along the way which I'm actually looking forward to as well. Good luck with it mate, might see you at a meet.

Yes mate our paths should cross this coming year good luck with your project get it up on here for all to read takes care of the dark nights good reading.
Good luck and all the best with it il keep my eye out for it starting.
go with the 4 door shell so long as its solid and not been involved in an accident should be fine ,plus easier to get in the back as mentioned should you need to once cage is welded in.
