Default asbestos in brake pads?

Just about to rub down some 4 POT calipers and rear sliders I've got hold of and paint them up.

They were off an STI 5 with pads which came with them..is asbestos in brake pads banned or is there there still a chance they could contain asbestos?

Got to rub the calipers down with a wire brush so there will be dust and and I'm a bit concerned.

Any help on this people??

Asbestos was removed from friction pads about 30 years ago IIRC

I think it was a bit later than that, I can remember when my family ran a garage the mechanics were taking precautions when working on brakes and clutches and that was in the 1990s. Although, I think shoes were more of a problem due to their longer service life ie a 1985 car may still have its originals ten years later.

I would have said its unlikely you would have a problem though unless the actual pads themselves were made way back. Guessing the car probably had new pads at some point which wouldn't have it in.

Sti 5 may not even have asbestos originally, I can't seem to find a definitive date on google when it went out of use.

If in doubt put on a mask and run a vacuum to suck up the dust, easy enough to do

edit sti 5 guessing 1997ish? sure that wont have any in

Just had a quick search......asbestos was to be totally banned in 1996 and was still being used in 1993 fords !!

I thought it had gone by the 80's given the link between Mesothelioma and asbestos was proven beyond doubt in 1960 and the first suspected cases were known in 1929.

The stuff is still getting used widespread in production methods in African countries to this day. The workforces generally know the dangers of asbestos but they want the work

At my place of work (Tata Steel in Scunthorpe) we're big on asbestos and I've seen all the videos, even one of said guys above working with all this blue and white stuff

You would think it was phased out years ago, but like I said I remember in the 90s mechanics taking precautions. Probably still some classics about with it in there brakes and clutches.

I think it took a while for the motor industry too find a replacement that was half as good. Fact is asbestos is a great material for making brakes but terrible for human health!
