hiya there i have just bought a subaru engine ej20 98/99 with head gasket gone im stripping it down now couse im going to use the block with my heads of my block as my block bottom end has gone, ive took inlet all of now time to take the heads of but relised that i need to take timing belt etc off first ive never done one before and dont know how to find the timing marks ect, can i just strip it without marking and then when i come to rebuild then find the marking and set it up on the rebuild

yeh, just take it apart, each cam pulley has 2 timing markings. if your nervous mark it up, in the technical section on here in archives there is a manual.

no point in marking the heads as you are swapping them , just make sure its timed up properly when you re fit the belt,. each cam pulley has 2 marks, the top and bottom pulley marks line up and the other 2 marks point at a right angle to the wings on the car,. the only other pulley is the crank pulley this has clear marks on it, once you have re built it if you are not sure get somone to fit the belt for you,.

ok cheers im not going to mark it im just going to strip it all of and then when putting it all back on then line it all up and not bolt the heads right down till its all lined up perfect

na tried hammer ect dont seem to work, i tried putting another socket/bar on another pulley with it jamed in place then tried to take of the front pulley but not having itt

ok becouse the engine is out of car and the gearbox is not on the engine i have screwed 2xbolts into were the flywheel goes and put a bar between the bolts so it cant spin when i try to lossen the front pulley. i now am going to use a breaker bar or impact gun to get the middle front pulley of then i can remove the timing belt plastic cover, can i damage anything un-doing the 22m pulley bolt with a gun or breaker bar or will it just free of and *** off easy
