I had a strange rattle at about 3-4000 rpm, only when the clutch was in or partially in, ie when changing gear, or just free reving the engine.

Three seperate garages have looked at the problem and found nothing. Suggestions included worn clutch thrust bearing, rattling springs on the clutch plate.

At long last, after about 5 minutes of tinkering I have cured the problem myself.

There are some small hydraulic pipes in the engine compartment, just in front of the drivers side dash. These resonate when the clutch peddle is in, and when the engine hits 4,000 rpm. They rattle like mad against the bulkhead. After stuffing a bit of rubber undarlay behind them the rattling has completely gone.

The mechanic said that he had heared this on several Imprezas, so I was wondering if anyone else here had experienced it ? - If so you know what to do now !

Mine was thought to be the heat shield - turned out to be a well known fault of the cambelt guides out of alignment causing the belt to rub on the cover - the belt was in a poor shape so the dealer said, could have snapped at any time!

Yeah, I have it too, but only in certain gears and only at 4,000 rpm. As soon as the revs drop below or go above 4,000 it stops. The whole dash vibrates on mine. Is this the same problem?

I posted the problem, but noone replied boo hoo

Cool

I posted much the same problem about 6 onths ago after picking up my new car. I nearly had a heart attack when I first heard it. Someone was kind enough to answer my post and told me what a common problem it was. I sorted it myself also.It was about this time when I realised what a valuable resource this BBS was!

Richard/CLS

What was the problem on your cars. Was it the SIDC solution that fixed it or the heatshield or the hydraulic pipes?
