Not sure they've come down that low yet. I would guess that 5K you're looking at a 94 L import with 100K miles on it. I know of some newer LHD models that have gone for 6-8K so that may be worth thinking about.
IMHO avoid anything without a service history(subaru or reputable import specialists) and do a full HPI check as well. With this kinda miles make sure it's fully RAC etc inspected. If you are buying private ask the owner how long he waits before he turns the engine off and how long before he boots it. If he says 'huh' or 'dunno' then walk away. The turbo could be scragged or on the way out.
The running costs are not to be sneezed at. At least £600 a year insurance, 16-25Mpg, servicing is cheaper but decent tyres will cost £100 plus each and will need a set of 4 every 10-16,000 miles depending on how you drive. Also factor in a good CAT 1 alarm and tracker, they will help the insurance costs.
Evo Magazine did a buyers guide a month or so back, so it's worthwhile trying to dig up a copy.
Hope this helps

I agree with Neil, what you also have to look at is if you buy an import then you can only run the car on super unleaded fuel, also the car should be serviced every 7.5k or 6 months which ever comes first, service costs vary from 100 to 400 pounds depending on what type of service it is. Insurance is a killer, mine is up for renewal and ive got quotes of up to 2.5k!!! and im 32!! scary!!

They seem to be going for just a bit more than I can afford to pay at the moment! I think myself and Dreamweaver are also in the same boat, maybe we could start our own club?

Test drove a 220 Turbo Coupe today - fairly quick, with lovely Bailey DV as well.
Shocking traction in the rain though!! Did you get your watch back?

Yes. Get a Fiat Panda and drive it for a year. Save more, scoobs come down further in price (so you can get a better one not a totally thrashed one), and your insurance is 30% cheaper.
