My build spec
Right then prezza owners.
My Legacy above is having a rebuild. The single turbo conversion is complete and now it is time for a new engine.
For now i'm going for.
Phase 1 tune
2.1 Closed Deck Engine
STI 9 nitrided crank
ACL competition spec bearings
Manley H-Section con rods
Mahle 2618 low friction pistons
Modified oil pump
Cosworth baffle plate
New sump
New oil modine
Version 3/4 Sti cylinder heads fully serviced
ESL Board
All this to power my VF22.
I have also got myself a juicy rotated GT30 which means i will also need the following.
Phase 2 tune
Unequal length tubular headers and rotated up-pipe
Rcm cone filter and trumpet
FMIC
740/850cc injectors
Simtek
Clutch
Rotated down pipe
And finally six speed conversion once the GT30 is on.
Can anyone else recommend any other turbo to go with phase 1?

Big spec leggy......love it !
Spray them wheels black and you'll have a beaut.
What is the time schedule between now and fitting your GT30. If its only a short period then stick with the 22 if you already have it. Will save you a few quid and if you only expect to run it for a few weeks then it doesn't really matter.

The wheels will be painted dark bronze. The Rota type colour.
The period between phase 1 and 2 is possibly a year or two as i've got bodywork to do and give my finances a little time to recover
I'm looking at something i can use at phase 1 that will utilize the engines capability and be something special without spending a load more on supporting mods.

Awesome spec Shaid. That is going to be one hell of a car.
What follows are my opinions, and as always, everyone has an opinion, so treat appropriately
I assume for your first build, you are sticking with the stock STi TMIC and 440cc injectors? In that case, these will limit your power, and going to a bigger turbo will achieve little. Unless you bring the FMIC+Injectors into the first build, I'd stick with the VF22 and start saving the pennies for the next level!
With the FMIC+Injectors, the TY752 is still going to be a bit of a limit - its life expectancy will shorten as you go for bigger turbos. The later VFs are not going to give you much over the VF22; maybe 10-20bhp? The bigger TD05s will give you a bit more, perhaps 360-380 and can be had and these turbos are not too expensive. These are starting to be a risk to your gearbox, though. Then going up the various lateral or scoobyclinic options for a bigger turbo in the standard position can push you over 400bhp but you may need to keep a bucket in the boot to pick up the pieces of your gearbox with plus the costs go up again.
All in all I might be tempted to stick with the VF22 for now.
For the phase 2, given you like to go on track, the baffle plate might be marginal for that power output and heavy duty track work. The extra power tends to have a significant effect of keeping the oil away from the pickup. Although options to address that get very expensive very quickly Also, a 255lph fuel pump will work okay on your phase 1 but you'll probably need something beefier for phase 2.
BTW the ESL demo car was running a similar spec to your phase 2 so the ESL daughterboard should be capable of running the phase 2 build as an option to cut costs. You'd need to replace the stock MAP sensor for something higher reading. Worth considering.

I'm still open to suggestions, I suppose i could go for bigger injectors at this stage but FMIC starts getting expensive so i can leave that out for a while. Whilst i'm at it i might as well upgrade the fuel pump too.

You won't need to change the ESL board to go to phase 2. My 97/8 wagon runs ESL with a stock location ATP GT3076R, MAFless, FMIC, 740cc injectors, Zen MAP sensor, 6 speed, forged 2.0. With a splash of meth on map 2 it makes 480bhp.

My VF30's still sitting here if ya want it shaid ..... would be ideal for your phase 1 and its yours for a song .... as long as its a nice song ...... with a little dance thrown in! :-)
it made 330/380 on my 2.5.
.... they give pretty much the same peak power as a vf34, just dont quite have the same spool!

The Vf22 is ball bearing the VF30 isnt, but the 30 spools up sooner and the power is more consistent through the revs.
The 22 makes more power i think but is laggyer.
But by all accounts there isnt as much in it as i first thought.

I hear the VF22 is a little on the weak side.
Is there any other turbo anyone can think of that will not need fmic and a new gearbox straight away?
I'm seriously thinking VF34/5 atm

VF22 is one of the best turbos in the vf range for big power, unfortunatley it is also one of the laggiest, and can be prone to breakages. A vf 30 is the same as a vf34 bar the 34 being roller bearing opposed to the 30 being sleeve bearing.A vf 35 is also sleeve bearing but quite quick spooling and a common upgrade. If you dont need much above 330 bhp then a vf28 might be an option,if you can find a good used one & is also one of the quickest spooling in the vf range.
Failing that you can opt for a td05 18g
