Your thoughts??
So... I had owned a scooby last year and loved every minute of it but had to sell it as it was costing way to much to run. No surprise there, but was such a shame. Petrol to work everyday was killing me. So.. Having sold it I obviously want to get another one! As you do!! Every time I see one I think hmmm that's nice! I was thinking about ways round it like having one as a "weekend car" and using a banger for work travel to save on petrol costs etc... Or get a moped! Does anyone here do the same and does it save any money and justify having one? And does weekend insurance even excist that actually works out to be worth it?

There are a few on here that do it, but i think with insurance the way it is and the ever rising cost of fuel 2x tax 2x insurance and 2x mot and thats before 2x servicing as well as the purchase cost of the second car, i can't see that there would be that much in it, and thats before anything goes wrong with either car.
Not really the thing to do if your trying to save money, it could end up costing more.
Fair enough if your flush, but if you could not cope with the costs involved first time, around having a scoob and another car is not really a smart move.
why don't you cycle to work if you want one that bad, i have a runabout treat it bad dont care about it cheap car, but thats because my mrs treats cars like shyte so there is no point buying her a decent one, between her and my lad they wreck em.

I bought a clio when I had my Supra , paid about £250 for it and ran it all through winter from say October to March which I know is not quite the same as you intend to use your second car for but the insurance was cheap and I sold it for £200 when I had finished with it . Worth it if you buy one with a good MOT IMO .

I run a cheap 306D and will be replacing my resently sold newage Sti with a mint low mileage P1 that will act like a hermit most of the time and stay in the garage but thats what i want and as long as i'm not paying the fuel to run a scoob around day in day out i am fine with the x2 costs.
I have 2 lots of NCB which does help plus i dont pay for my diesel

If you like the Scooby looks & handeling would you consider a 2.0 GX Sport?
I had one before my WRX, it was cheap to buy (54 plate for £2600), cheap to insure & was good on fuel, I could get up to 37mpg.

I think cost wise you would have to be doing a lot of miles commuting to really save any cash. As above 2x insurance, mot, tax, repairs, servicing really adds up.
Do the calculations over a year and see what the cost saving if any would be.

I'll never sell mine, i'm thinking about getting a second car.
For the people who sell them becuase of running costs/relationships/living, you disgust me lol, there is nothing to gain from selling up.
Thanks
Sam

I have a 4 cars at the moment[bit greedy I know lol] and tbho there isn't a reason why you can't have a 'weekend toy'.
My classic is only used on weekends and some times might not move for a month or more.
Current cars
Classic impreza
Forester TT/B
Ford C-Max
Nissan Micra
BUT if you include works cars as well I actually have seven lolol

Cheers for replies. Seems like everyone has a slightly different take. I'm not exactly flush, but the journey to work was a 60 mile round trip and was stop start all the way so sort of ruined having such a nice car. I used to drive the mrs car on the odd day and when I got back in the scoob it was like a new car! Felt faster too!! Lol not sure I could be happy with the sport if I'm honest!

I have a 60 mile trip for work too so before I bought the Scoob I agreed with the missus that I would take her Ibiza diesel most days and she could walk cos there was no way she was firing up the Scoob for a 1 mile each way trip to her work!
As it as turned out, I can never resist the Scoob! It costs me a fortune but you only live once etc...

I do it, works out cheaper and save on the wear and tear on the scoob and keep its miles down. I was spending around £50+ on fuel going to work and using it as a every day car. The money you save by using a cheap run about can easily pay for another car / insurance etc.
