Hi
Am new to scoobynet and new to owning a subaru!

I have recently purchased an x-reg turbo 2000 uk model.
It basically needs a new engine, as the oil pump decided to give up and lilled the engine. So i have bought a rolling shell, but have an engine for spares.
Where would be the best and cheapest place to buy a new engine from, and what do i need to look for?

As i say im new to subarus, i am a complete novice!

Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

depends how long you want it to last?

speak to a specialist about a proper rebuild, will more than likley save you alot of time, effort and problems down the line.

o and a word of warning, beware anyone selling engine on ebay, most give gaurenties that are useless and when things go wrong they just claim bad installation and walk away if they even bother to repsond at all.

are you planning to keep the car standard or modify it for power at a later date?

Best bet would be to source a v7/8 sti bottom end and bolt your heads onto that.

Also depends on what your budget is chap.

I had the exact same problem with my X reg so I know what youre going through.

While theory is sound, without stripping it down to find out if the heads are good or bad. There is no way to know if the current heads are warped, cracked, damaged etc etc

This is why a specialist who knows what there doing is need so they can find whats gone wrong and replace anything needing to be replaced.

My budget at this time of year is cheap as possible! But i can wait if its going to be worth my while. Is it only this engine that will fit straight in ( with the current ecu/loom ) or will ecu need to be changed?

for a proper job your talking 2k at rough guess. I think you need to take some proper specialist advice.

API is down your way i think and David is always great when advising poeple o best course of action

give us a rough idea on budget chap, and the spec of the car you've bought.

If its a completely stock X reg in good condition its worth anywhere from £1500-2500. Once you put another engine in there, its still going to be worth the same so keep this in mind.

I was lucky, I found a running car with an engine in it which had all the history/mileage etc plus had an RCM oil and water pump fitted so I bought the engine to put in mine for £450. If I had more money I would have gone a different route but i'd only had the car 6 weeks and couldnt afford it.

Budget wise, cheap as poss at the min. £700-800 tops. If i can get it cheaper i'll be happy. The engine that was in the car was pretty much stock, bar an induction kit and a remap i think he said. Has the add on dump valve etc.

Api have just quoted me £1500 for a rebuild. Which i spose is a fair price, but being so soon after christmas, out of my price range at the min!
The car i have just bought is off a friend, who is a scooby fanatic. Its absolutely mint, inside and out. I will try and upload a photo a bit later when i have a bit of time.

Lol, you can remap it via ecutek for £550. Its commonly done on 1999/2000 imprezas.

First off, find out if it WAS the oil pump that caused the failure.

THEN find out what sort of failure, and how drastic.

Remember that if it's suffered bearing failure, it will need a new oil modine, refurbed oil pump, bearings etc plush the engine needs a scrupulous clean on it's insides so as not to get debris from the previous failure to cause another

If it were me, I'd save and get API to do it...then you KNOW it will be right

Do it now cheap, take the risk of paying twice

How good is the rest of the car? Has it got the dreadeed rusty rear arches for instance. I only ask as you may be throwing good money after bad.

If it isn't great then an option would be to break it for spares as and put the money toqards finding a well kept Turbo 2000 that is running well. You should be able to pick up a great car for between £2 and 3K maybe less.

LOL ya I know but he didnt put that in he's post I did say i wasn't sure I didnt think you could map the standard ECU

The car is a minter. No rust. Always garaged, interior perfect condition. Low milage too. Around 70k. Been well looked after.

Yeah will probably do that as im in no rush really. But you know what its like... Just want to drive!!! But i'll be sensible on this car. Want to get it right. Its too good to break, honestly!!!! Will start saving for a proper rebuild with the right people then. I would like to take it to shows in the summer, so ive got a few months.

Mine was off the road nearly 9 months after an engine failure.

Did it right, by the right people, no worries now.
