Classic variations
Im thinking about buying a classic but I'm finding the range a little confusing so I'm after a basic guide to the standard bhp figures and the differences.
Also I've seen some classics advertised as sti's but when looking at the photo of the engine not all have the top mounted inter cooler ontop of the engine. I'm guessing these are wrx's being passed off as sti's am I correct?
So far I've found
22b's which are a little pricey lol
Rb5s
Sti's
Standard wrx
And alot of cars called uk 2000 I'm guessing that they are non imports and just from 2000 but am also thing is it a model.
Also what differences do the import cars have

Japanese Imports...
WRX (all 4 doors) - comes in saloon and estate (wagon)
WRX STI (all 4 doors) - comes in saloon and estate (wagon)
Type R (sti) (3 doors) - saloon only
Type RA WRX or STI (all 4 doors) - saloon only
UK models
Turbo 2000 (most common, 4 door only) - comes in saloon and estate (wagon)
Cataluna (sp) (4 door only) - saloon only
Series Mcrae (4 door only) - saloon only
555 (4 door only) - I think they did a very limited run of estates (wagons) but mostly saloons
p1 (3 door, pretty much UK version a Type R but there are differences) - saloon only
Terzo (4 door only) - saloon only
RB5 (4 door only) - saloon only
Then there is the most prestigious 22b (3 door), there were UK and import models of this but not many were made and they are very expensive.
I'm not 100% accurate on my info but I *think* most wrx are around 240bhp standard and the sti's are around 280bhp standard.
I know that the UK turbo2000 are around the 200bhp mark. There are exceptions and some come with different packages such as PPP (prodrive performance packs on UK models)
Someone who knows a lot more info and is more accurate will come along soon enough to correct me / expand.

the top mount intercooler was on all imprezas as standard, people take them off and fit a front mount intercooler for better cooling,. the import turbos are a better spec than the uk ones and will be more likley to be rust free unlike the uk ones,.

Imports normally have more power, depending on age and model depends on their power output, for example the MY94 STI has 250ps, the MY96 or version 2 has 275ps and the MY97 or version 3 STI has 280ps (thats 276bhp), this was the highest power rating in the classics, dont fall for any bs about 300bhp out of the box etc, its not true.
Early wagons have less power than their saloon brothers, STI wagons have the same power as their saloon brothers.
Its complicated

Best bit of advice is to buy a book on the Impreza. Chris Rees did a fantastic book called ' you and your Subaru Impreza'.
There are so many different variations of the classic and different power levels, trim levels etc etc it can become very confusing. I like to think I'm pretty clued up on the classic Impreza but even I turn to a book for advice now and again.
