Hello guys been registered and browsing a while but first post.

Picked up the love of my life about a month ago, It's a mint black 2005 sti on a 54 plate and had a few questions which I hope you can answer.

Firstly the car is registered in Jan 2005, does this make it "the best UK subaru ever?" I can see the Centre diff control but theres no mention of DCCD. How does this work? as in what kind of percentage of power can you send to the rear?

Secondly..... Had an engine light come on and go off last week, showed up as it is spiking boost, local tuner thinks that porting the turbo will cure it? I know guessing the cause on here may be impossible but I just wanted to know if i'm being had, plus I did want to go to a bigger turbo in the new year and don't really want to **** around with this one.

Sorry for an annoying first post and thanks in advance for any help!

The centre diff control is DCCD-A.
DCCD-A stands for driver controlled centre differential- Auto. To change the diff settings, change from auto to manual using the switch on the left out of the two by the handbrake and then turn the wheel next to it backward or forward. The most amount of power you can send to the back is 65% and that is when it is on the empty green square, right at the bottom(the display on the speedo). If you don't know how the DCCD works then i would recommend leaving it on auto. NEVER drive with the DCCD on lock as it may **** your diff up. As you car was registered in 2005 and has the DCCD-A, yes it is the later model.

Boost surge or boost spike is very common with the turbo on your car, and yes the cure is to get it ported.

I would read up on the supporting mods you need to do, to get to the power level you want as it is not as simple as bolting on a bigger turbo and off you go. Use the search function at the top of the page to search through threads containing the info you require.

Some turbos that are the dogs danglies at the moment:

Cheers for the quick reply mate, Yeah sorry should have mentioned it already has full decat japspeed, walbro, induction kit and remap at RCM, guessing about 320ish?

I know I will need some supporting mods but coming from bikes I would like a bit more power, more into corners but would be nice to be overwhelmed by the power a tiny bit occasionally.

Is it dangerous to run as it is for a few months or just not worth the risk?

No problems driving with lock on, just not recommended to do it for long periods of time

OP, welcome
If the car is boost spiking (rather than compressor surge) then you need to find the cause, it may need the map tweaking as that is most likely the problem, but its best to get it sorted out, and who is your nearest speciallist/dealer?

Now you dont really need that induction kit either, that could be sapping power unless its fitted in the inner wing, the standard air intake system is good for over 400bhp on one of these cars

DCCD-A, there should be a supplemental part to your handbook explaining how it works (or it could be in the hand book), it is best to leave it in auto as it does something like 30 adjustments per second, more than any human can keep up with

Cant put pics on for some reason but this is the car

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2906314453...84.m1423.l2648

Does anyone know it? on a different plate now

Nearest specialist/ tuner I found was GRD in surrey, very nice bloke gave it a full check up when I got it.

With porting will it need a remap aswel? He said he could cure it with a map but he would have to limit boost. I would like it very healthy for a few months before I fiddle with it.

From what I've read I thought that about the induction kit, but would RCM fit it that was the case? It's had the last three services and some tuning from them

I have the same car as yours, MY05 STI, and have recently had a Sports Cat downpipe, 255lph upgraded fuel pump and remapped to 336 bhp. My boost is holding through the rev range at 1.4 bar. IIRC the stock turbo is a VF35 which should be good up to 340bhp. My car feels like a rocket right the way through to 7000rpm.

I don't know where you're based, but I used Slowboy Racing, near Brands Hatch in Kent. The guy there will get you back into tip top condition.

What mileage does your car have?
Did it have a hard life, prior to your ownership?
Was it serviced regularly?

First things first, you need sort the boost spiking out and find the cause, a rolling road would be my first suggestion (speak with Bob Rawle, he is based in Swindon), if the car is only running 320bhp(ish) then you need to know why its spiking (Bob can also map/check your map).

Then there is the issue of needing to have the turbo ported, why? if its compressor surge then id be going for an uprated actuator, but the turbo would be pushing 350-360bhp for that in reality... so are you being bent over a barrel and taken for a ride?

As for why RCM fitted their induction kit, hey the last owner wanted one, rcm sell them and wont say no if you wanted to have one fitted, they are a business and need to sell items to make a profit, if you asked them for a panel filter they would sell you one of those too

So, first things first, speak with a GOOD mapper, Bob is up there among the best and he is only down the M4 and you need a rolling road facility to check the car out properly to see why its spiking.
