Hello everyone.

Having owned several imprezas i have just purchased a 1998 sti type r version 4 and decided to sign up here for some advice etc.

I dont know much about this car so any help is much appreciated,
it has fully adjustable coilover suspension that i need to adjust as the ride is too firm and also a billion variable fan controller in the glove box.(what is this for)???

it also has the general mods including stainless exhaust and filter etc. my question is what other engine mods are easy enough to do for extra horses. and am i right in thinking this will be around 300bhp as it is.

Any help would be great
Regards

Mike

- Walbro 255 fuel pump (or better), from £70
- Fresh fuel filter, £20?
- Fresh NGK PFR7B (or G) spark plugs, £25-35
- Fresh OEM panel air filter (or K&N, Green, etc), £20-50
- EcuTek remap of your OEM ECU, by a mapper of your choosing, c.£650

Up to 320-330bhp, mapped on 99RON, to be had on your super-spooling IHI VF28 turbo - a SAFE increase over the stock 276, by a potential c.20%!

To make the most of the remap, it's a good idea to swap out the std catted downpipe for a s.s decatted one, £80+ (plus a decent s.s. exhaust system, £250+) - depending on funds/future MOT 'hassles'

It's defo worth doing from a safety aspect alone, as the STi Version 5 ECU has one of the most aggressive timing profiles on the OEM map. Plus it was mapped for Jap 100RON, which they had in 1999!

Personally, I'd defo keep off boost till you do get a remap...

What Joz said is top advice. I would also add, get it checked buy a mapper in is current state to make sure its running ok on UK fuel - don't run it on anything less than super unleaded.

Is it a MY98 or MY99 (is the coil pack in the centre of the inlet manifold or off to the right?)

Oops, according to the OP it's a MY98 v.4 - I overlooked that, sorry. But as said, is the coilpack in the centre (just to be certain)?

If it is a v.4, the ECU choice will have to be the recently released ESL replacement board then (OEM features/price). You can run MAFless as well!

So the car could have a VF22/23/24 then. But similar figures to be gained in the remap, regardless.

OEM map isn't quite so aggressive as v.5/6, I'm led to believe(?) But what Don says is very sage advice, regardless.

Defo a v.3/4 lump then.

Take a pic of the cabin too - that will determine a v.3 or v.4 for sure, too.

Also a close-up pic of the VIN plate on the passenger suspension tower - to corroborate everything...

My V4 Type R runs over 300bhp (about 305 iirc) with just a remap (Simtek ecu and MAFless) and uprated fuel pump.

Speak to Dynamix on here as he's been remapping the ESL boards like crazy iirc he's done about 10 in the last couple of months he seems to be quite happy with it.

Post pics of the VIN plate and cabin...

Surely, being in the Sonic Blue, isn't that a V-Limited too?

I LOVED my V4 Type R, they're incredible! My only criticism was the short 5th gear which meant motorway journeys were a bit loud.

In terms of engine mods, start with a solid foundation. When I first had mine it was pretty much standard, I jumped in with a dump valve, new turbo back exhaust with sports cat and an induction kit and straight away I started getting boost cut from time to time on WOT which isn't great.

That was cured with a different ecu but it's not the cheapest option, that said it's a solid foundation for future plans.

It finished with a 3" decat exhaust, a high quality Sard dual core top mount and a VF34 turbo, it's still going strong now, I'm hoping to get it back for a Dyno run once our's is installed.

Has yours caught you out yet? I can still recall the last thing the previous owner said when I picked it up, "for a while, just be a straight line hero mate" - it was good advice for me having not owned a car like that before.

I don't think it's a v limited.I can't see a roof vent.
Joz your avatar makes me take twice as long to hit the reply button.I'm tempted to pinch it.

My mate got caught out by the DCCD on his v.5 Type R...

Those awful greasy, no standing water, condtions... cold at night... he was 'racing' a couple of Evos lol... got on power too early just before apex of roundabout... colossal fishtail!... got it back... then it gripped again and shot him into the DC's central armco!

Bonnet, bumper, NSF wing, lights, some suspension parts, all needed repairing/replacing.

Yep.

A Type R WRX STI Version IV (4).

So the v.6 front end has been added, de-tango crystal lights set, as well as the wing/alloys.

Cool and the.

They're great for that, I had a superb bit of sideways action 10 minutes after I first got behind the wheel of mine..... completely unintentional and terrifying at the time

Couple of questions. Why aren't the indicators cancelling and the gearstick feels a little sloppy

Indicators
Do you have an aftermarket steering wheel/boss?

Gearstick
Not sure, but is there a spring cited on the underside of the floorplan that pre-tensions it? If so, that could be missing/broken...?

great cars the first impreza i ever owned and what a machine big regrets getting rid of it but youll have smiles all the way to next year mate.

Just one thing that caught me out in first ownership was the dccd was fully locked when i tried to park it once ,thought someone had tried ripping the wheels off when i was still driving it !!! major clunking noise then realised my mistake .. live and learn enjoy mate the best impreza in my eye's !
