Default drilled and grooved or just grooved? Groovy. lol

hi,

need to get some new discs for my car, i only have the bare to spend, fond some cheap drilled and grooved for like 69 quid 294mm front, vented..

but found some for the same price without drilled?

my question is.. whats the difference and advantages disadvantages?

also i know obv all the brakes are important, but i assumed is the back not used the most as my old discs back hardly have wear? so should i just spend cheapest on the discs at the back?

also i think i can only afford mintex pads, are they crap?

cheers, Jamie.

p.s i dont drive hard tbh maybe a quick boot here and there..

For the most part with brakes you will get what you pay for, Mintek pads will be similar to oem spec, but I wouldn't recommend pushing the car with them on.

As for the whole drilled versus grooved versus both, grooved discs are the best option in my experience as cheaper drilled discs can crack, I've experienced this a number of times in the past so just be careful.

If you're on a tight budget, for pads speak to Ian Godney (Godspeed Brakes) about his Kevlar pads!

As above Ryan suggest with some brakes you must be careful,i've used in past CRN brakes, which has been spot on like price and performance.About the pads i would suggest something like EBC YellowStuff or RedStuff if its budget tight,Mintex are not as bad like most people think, worse are just Pagid basic pads are worse which i've on mine Subaru...

Both traders like Bob@Aztec performance or Ian@Godspeed brakes selling same brakes for similar prices and really depends on your feeling

I too have experienced this, even with OEM disks.

just grooved, as above i tried drilled once and they cracked around the edges of the holes, so had to replace them, so ended up costing twice as much inside 6 months.

i tend to disagree with the pagid comment. Ive used red stuff. They were rubbish then performance friction they worked pretty well but i was still able to get them so hot during a 90 second sprint that i had fade. Switched to pagid standard pads and disc as a short term fix coz i needed a set for road use. I was so impessed with them i kept them on for sprinting and on the same track couldnt over heat them. I had my car since 2003 and had many pad/disc combos in that time all on brembo calipers. The cheapest i bought being pagid and there the best ive ever had

Cheap brakes, on an impreza, seriously?

I dont have a huge amount to spend on my impreza but one thing I wouldnt skimp on is brakes, theyre kind of important.

I've tried these on mine wagon with OE 4pots and your Brembo is little bit different league against OE 4 pots.

I've run like you Pagid drilled and grooved disc and Pagid basic pads.

Not cheap. Nomal price. Ive found a 40 quid set of pads to be better than a 140 quid set. Price doesent always mean better in my expereince. Although i wouldnt buy cheap chinese stuff

I agree, but the op has stated he wants to go for the cheapest and on a 99 impreza with 4 pots thats really not a good idea.

funnily enough i took off pf grooved disc and pads. Fitted standard discs not grooved or drilled. Standard pads all pagid. And as i said before there the best ive ever had on it. I agree brembos are better than the 4 pots. But im comparing my findings all on the same caliper

I've tried Pagid pads too on normal(solid)disc, still the same, later on i swap pads for EBC Bluestuff NDX but still not the best solution for heavier New age WRX and with 350bhp,due this i would add invest money to better calipers and disc combo(this is not aiming on you,but on New age WRX owners or classic owners)

Its not just cheap drilled discs that can crack. I have had some expensive drilled and grooved discs froma very well known company crack on me so i will be sticking with grooved from now on.

I would never go cheap when it comes to brakes.

okay i have found these which i think i am happy with

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUBARU-IMP...item2a028b0f1a

i am going to take the advice with the pagid pads and give them a go, i had 2 pots before i have just upgraded to 4 pots, but even with the 2's on i rarely made them struggle so i think it will be okay

Most of the cheap discs on ebay are from China , and are of poor quality , I can supply you our grooved discs with our kevlar sport pads for £99 a set plus £12.50 P&P
For quality , performance and price , these cannot be beaten

also how much for the rear set too i really like the look of those discs and pads and looks liek a great deal!

thanks!

Like many have said. U have to spend on brakes. Not exactly brake the bank but enough to get a good set as they are very important. Ran vented disc on both scoobys. So they are the only 1s I can recommend.

drilled discs usually crack, dimples are a possibility but wont make much difference imo. The number of grooves wont majorly affect things i dont think...i think one of theyre main purpose is to help deglaze the pads iirc?

Iv got some godspeed grooved discs with kevlar pads from ian on my OEM 4/2 pot set up, they do the job great imo, i always feel pretty confident with them...

Hi
Regarding grooves on a disc , the reason they have grooves is to disperse the gases that the pads give off when they get hot from hard use , the softer the pad the more gas they give off , so you need more grooves to cope , the downside of more grooves is you actually have less braking area , so performance drops , and more grooves will wear the pads out quicker.
I find with performance pads getting better , they don't give off as much gases , so I don't see the need of putting more grooves than is needed , with the testing we have done , we find 6 grooves to work the best for overall braking , and longevity .

You can check out more details and pictures on our website , another thing we offer is that our disc centres are painted black so they stay looking nice behind the wheels ,

www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk

We always have these in stock for a next day delivery

Cheers Ian

Wise choice, i have godspeed discs and they are top quality items, and more importantly they work very well and you won't be replacing them any time soon
