Default Thinking of buying a used STi 10 plate

Hello folks,

Newbie to the forum, so be gentle please!

My current drive is a Vectra VXR, which is an absolute blast. However, I've had my heart set on a hatch STI for sometime now. Have finally found a 10 plate at a Nissan dealer north of Oxford, and was very close to taking the plunge, until I saw the sticky thread about engines letting go. Have posted my concerns in that thread too, but in case people don't see it, was looking for some advice please? Is it really that common a problem? I always thought that Scoobys were pretty much bullet proof? I really do want to take the plunge, but obviously don't want my dream shattered by a fragile engine!

My work means I do highish mileage (20,000+ a year), so any other comments would be most helpful.

Cheers!

Someone will give you a better answer in the engine failure thread which you already posted on. Ive not heard of any MY11 hatches that have let go and many have the 320R power upgrade. That said they arent that old yet. One would hope Subaru learnt from the previous issues which a lot of people believe was due to poor mapping and piston quality.

Is the one your looking at definetly an MY10 as there are quite a few (mostly in San Remo Red) being sold on '10 plates as registered late but are the previous model.

Im in a similar position although looking to buy next april. You will have 2 yrs warranty left although your mileage might shorten that. Another alternative is the Jap Spec (JDM) STi's that still use a 2.0 ltr twinscroll and dont have the piston problems found in the 2.5 engines. But then you wont get a full warranty unless you buy from a specialist like Litchfield Imports.

Btw what are the Nissan garage selling for? For comparison there are quite a few MY11 cars on Subaru.co.uk and Autotrader for mid £20k's with low mileage. Saloons are going cheaper as a lot more around than hatches.

do it

buy extended warranty.... I did an extra 2yrs on top of the 1year still running on the car.

Yep.. some engines let go. But if you look after it and don't 'fiddle' with it it should be fine.
You hear about the faults on engines more than the possitive points.. like with any issue.

Have a look at the gallery section... look for the HATCH Thread 2008-on

Which car you look at?

Cheers for replies so far.

Its definitely previous generation, late registered in Jan 2010.

Its at Westway Nissan - £17,000 with less than 9K, which seems pretty fair. Although I'm still negotiating PX on my VXR.

Believe me, I'm ready to change, but having had a load of hassle in the past with shocking reliability on VWs.......... you get the drift.....

yep and the interior on it is 330s spec.... not what you'd find on a std UK STi.

mine has no mods runs standard sti at 306 bhp
best buy ever i have done 39000 and i would recommend never missed a beat
some have gone but thats the same with all cars
you present car is not comparable to the sti for handling power or performance
the sti is a leugue higher sounds a good buy with that many miles and year
as long as its an sti and not a wrx
