Default Correct 17" wheel offset for classic wagon?

Been reading lots of search results and have established PCD is 5 x100, but keep seeing different offsets and tyre sizes quoted.

48-52 seems to be the suggested offset. Which set of OEM wheels fits the best?

Depends on what brakes are fitted as well, i have a 95 classic with 4 pots and an ET of 48 i think and it just clears the 4 pots, by about 0.5 - 1mm, so id say for 4 pots an ET of 50 is ample

If you still have 2 pots then 48 is o.k

A brake upgrade is on the list, so it's important that's planned for.

I want the best stance I can have without any rubbing, so is that ET50 or ET52 and are OEM wheels usually 7J?

Dpending on tyre size, i have 205/45/17, my ET is 48, i just get clearance to the 4 pots and i have about 1/2" gap between tyre wall and lip of the arch and do get a slight rub if loaaded with passengers/fuel

i wouldnt want to run a 205/215/40/45/17 tyre with an ET of 53 as i think that would be pretty close to the arch lip.

i suppose it depends on tyre size, rear passenger weight and if any rear passenger when thinking about tyre/offset rubbing

i wouldnt run over an ET 50, but maybe other guys who do can say if they rub or not ?
