Steering boss

Hello all I read somewhere that the early classics don't need a boss when fitting an aftermarket steering wheel, is the true? Can anyone shed some light

If you get a boss from an early import (from the nardi steering wheel type) it can be used for most aftermarket wheel types I found

I've got the nardi wheel but no boss or is it built in?
