Default induction question

can anyone tell me what the many bulbous chambers and weird little blind dog leg pipes that comprise the intake system on non turbo impreza /legacy models are for? My friend's '97 legacy has std filterbox/maf set up then huge seemingly pointless chamber with dog leg pipe directly above throttlebody, we're stumped
