Rule of thumb - V1 & V2 STI's, 92-95 WRX RA's (pre-facelift) and some lucky pre-facelift WRX's. There do seem to be some exceptions to this though so always best to check.

Early single turbo Leggy's also got the CDB.

All other classics from 97-2000 were open deck block no matter if they were STI's, WRX's, RA's or Turbo 2000.

Rule of thumb is anything pre 95, so 93-94 cars are cdb (jdm only), some 95 RA's, version 2 sti's are open deck as they are 96 MY cars.

Tony, I have known a few early (93/94) WRX's that haven't had a CDB. Whether it is because these are now old cars and aren't on their original engine I couldn't tell you. It is always worth checking early WRX's.

Are there any MY96 cars? I was under the impression that there was no MY96. I thought any car registered in 1996 was either a late MY95 that had been hanging around or early MY97 models? Or are STI's different (were they still being hand-made at this point ie pulling cars off the production line and giving them the STI treatment)?

They produced a model every year since MY93's came out
Version 2 STI's are MY96 cars, v3's MY97 etc, though you probably found a couple of wrx's with replacement engines as everyone thinks that cdb's are much stronger (internally) than other engines

Tony
Only reason I asked was that my mate has a 96 registered WRX which had the same model letter in the applied code as my old MY95 WRX (the letter C).

I understood that A=MY93, B=MY94, C=MY95, then D=MY97, 1996 was missed out, maybe I am wrong, I'm always happy to learn

CDB are only as strong as the internals that are in them. Rods will still punch a big window in the side when they let go!!
