I have a P1 as a weekend toy and have recently been looking at various diesel cars as a daily/family car- obvious Golfs etc then stumbled across this Impreza Diesel which got me thinking. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...ge/1?logcode=p

With 50mpg, cheap tax and insurance is this the future of Subaru ownership?

Is there a few Diesel owners on here? What do you think of the car? Does it handle and give you the grin factor a Subaru should?

I have had one from new since June 2000 from Stan palmers to keep the greenwagon company
Just turned 30k miles as I use it as my main car now.
WR blue with gold Gt1 wheels ,still on original Tyres
Extras fitted STi rear spoiler and grill and tints
Had 2 services with no problems and everything is going well

MPG reset at 10k 42.9
'. 20k 44.9
"". 30 k 48.9
As the engine loosens up it is getting more economical and is getting faster
With 300ibs torque it flys and keeps up with my classic every time and no difference in performance
1-2gear waste of time third and forth is when the torque really shows and is awesom and will not disappoint you at all
Tend to go 4 then straight to 6th gear in normal driving
ultra light clutch and steering is great too
Handling grips ok but just a bit too much body lean for me compared to my classic
Great in snow and wet which is important to me
Equipment levels are excellent with cruise control and heated seats
Refinement is excellent but I miss the roar of the decatted flat four But when I get 500 to the tank every time compared to the 250 with the classic I can't complain
Price well not cheap compared to golfs and other rivals though
Mine new cost 23k with extras last time I looked it would of been over 25k with extras but I see they have disappeared from the Subaru price lists ?
Second hand seem to be holding value well with 09 fetching 15.5-16k and 10 models 20k +
insurance is ok with group 14 so £299 for me
And no timing belts to change and rfl a nice £155
Great car so would recommend but will treat myself to sports exhaust and suspension tweaks when out of warranty

Cheers for the reply LordH. Looks a cracking car! Not cheap yes, but have you seen the prices of GT Golfs!! Didn't think they had as much torque as that. With a sports exhaust do you think it will give it the scooby burble or is it just a typical diesel soundtrack?

I think I may go and have a look at the one in the link. I'm not expecting it to drive like my P1 but then again I don't want it to! There's a baby on the way and I love the idea of practicality and refinement but still sticking with the Subaru brand. I like the Legacys too but they are pricey and I'm still in my 20s (just!)

They seem very expensive and low on power, low mpg when you put them next to a seat Leon Fr or a skoda VRS.

I have a vrs and didn't try the Subaru as it was more than I wanted to spend on a second car.

i had mine for 24,000 miles no probs except blew it's turbo seals requiring whole engine and turbo rebuild taking 4 months so p/ex to get wife new forester never got above 44mpg and in typical subaru manner as soon as you accelerate mpg goes down great car though
