Default can i crack 300bhp?

all right lads. ive been buying some bits over the last few months hopefully to get my wagon upto 300 bhp or thereabouts. my wagon is a uk my96, sitting on 78k and from what i can tell has been treated well in its life. it was standard when i bought it apart from a baileys dv which i binned for a forge as it was sticking open and dumping boost. i fittted a boost gauge and was pleasantly suprised to find it boosts at 15psi. its just had a new timing belt and oil and filter at ra motorsport and a walbro 255. they also fitted a 100 cell sportcat too. ive also bought some 440,s and carl davey kit to fit mine (they are v.2 440,s) a k&n panel filter and a 98 version map sensor to allow running higher boost. i also bought an apexi avc-d electronic boost controller which came with the apexi 3 port solenoid as well. and an fse adj fuel regulator. so to sum up:
  1. 100 cell sportcat and turbo back exhaust
  2. k&n panel filter
  3. walbro 255 and fse adj. fuel reg
  4. 440 inj and fitting kit
  5. td05 turbo, 98 map sensor
  6. origional subaru 3 port boost solenoid as standard
ive now also bought an apexi fc and commander to be mapped as well
probably by andy forrest or trackhound. so do i need to fit the apexi avc-d now or do i just get the boost settings adjusted through the power fc? i bought the avc-d before i got the power fc but i like the fact the boost can be set through the rpm,s 3000,5000, and 7000rpm iirc. it also has scramble boost function when a switch is fitted too. is there any point in fitting them both? im guessing i wont have scramble boost etc through the power fc? also is there any advantage to using the apexi 3 port over the subaru origional? i noticed that the apexi 3 port is listed as an optional extra for the apexi fc parts list. would it control the boost better using the apexi over the subaru 3 port? any chance i can crack 300 with the mods ill have? all thoughts welcome especially regarding the avc-d as i can sell it on if i dont need it. ps. if any one has an avc-d and needs the instruction manual give me a shout. mine came with a photocopied set and they are hard to find in english (trust me i tried everywhere! even using google translate!)

andy set up a similar spec on mine, i had an apexi avcr and power fc ecu on my jdm 94 sti.

walbro and 440's.

i honestly dont know what the avc-d is?

after he set it all up it was such an improvment, with exhaust too.

i dont know , but i suspect all the apexi bits should work well with each other - im just hazarding a guess, maybe worth emailing andy for advice? prob done it many thousands of times

yeah prob a good idea but i know how busy he is lol. the avc-d was the early version of the avc-r. apparently used mainly for drag racing but its a cool wee bit of kit at night when all light up lol. so did u manage to get to 300 with ur car?

you know its that long ago i cant remeber, i think at hypertech i got just over 300bhp, but that car and dyno graph are long gone, altho it maybe on my pc? ill have a look

ask andy at ra about your set up , i loved the black edition avcr. at night looked great, so much better than the power fc hand controller,

really missed that when i went simtek

ill have a look see if i can find that graph if its on photobucket

nice one thanks m8. the avc-d is a bit "retro" compared to the avc-r with its digital display and all lol. be nice to get 300bhp to up the grin factor! car feels quick as is so be interesting to see what it gets. andy at ra was selling a my98 classic a few months back and said mine felt quicker than the 1 he was selling which is encouraging.

personaly i wouldn't bother with the boost controller, the ecu will do that for you. But turbo should push enough air for 300, only slight hicup might be how much the cat reduces it, but will find that out when its mapped.

p.s. only fit the mods just before mapping

I'm not entirley sure if it will do switchable maps or not, i think it may but its pretty old tech now.

mm, slanty intcooler is a bit meh, will def not help, might be worth looking at front mounting it and get it all done before being mapped.

Don't want to go fmic at the mo so will see how it goes on the slanty ic. Need to do some reading up on the power fc and see if it allows switchable maps.

The slanty will hold you back if you are wanting to crack 300 easily. Keep your eye out for the later type if you dont want to chop thew **** out of your front end..

found this posted by jgm a while back (2007 lol)

'You cannot do two maps on the powerFC no.. you could use datalogit to swap maps though.

Simon'

so sounds like you can fudge it, if this info is still current or not i have no idea.

I would concentrate on the brakes, the 2 pots wouldnt stop a shopping trolley let alone a 300bhp car

agrred the 2 pots were horrible, i wouldnt even waste the cash on fours tbh, (i tried)

go straight to an aftermarket kit.

and fmic isnt to expensive if doing yourself - can be abit time consuming, but worthwhile, esp if your going to go further in future

Hi mate, Paul here (sold you the apexi PFC).
The apexi can not do switchable maps although it will allow you to choose between 4 boost settings, mine were 0.8, 1.1, 1.25 & 1.45bar boost.

I have a used front mount here if you want it for £100 posted, will certainly help your chase for 300bhp. ;-)

If your Wagon has the standard turbo it is a TD04.
Your car runs Phase 1 injectors (380cc) so you need 440cc to exceed 300 bhp.
Your Sports CAT and TMIC will make achieving 300 bhp VERY unlikely but as different rolling roads give different figures and the figures themselves are not really that important you might get a print out at 300 from the right place.
Check if you mean an AVC-R? I am not sure what an AVC-D is but the Apexi ECU works well with a boost controller as the boost control on the Apexi Power FC ECU is a bit crude.

thanks for replys lads. paul thanks m8 very tempted at that price for the fmic, will let u know but road tax due in 2 weeks and promised the missus some spending money for the holiday as well! i have got a set of 4 pots to go on so i havent entirely forgot about stopping! harvey thanks for your input, im pretty sure its a tdo5 on mine the chimmney is still on so its difficult to see the casting properly but im sure it says tdo5 and 2 of my mates think so too, so i assume if it is it means it had a replacement turbo then at some point? its def an avc-d boost controller i have :http://route44performance.com/catalo...ge.php?pID=218 its the early predeccesor to the avc-r. it came with the 3 port apexi solenoid which i assume i can use with the pfc ecu to control boost? would it work any better than the subaru 3 port which i have already on the car? im not fussed about different maps if i can do as paul says and choose different boost settings with the commander on the pfc.

Harvey, the UK MY94-96 Wagons had the TD05H of their saloon counterparts. (The JDM MY93-96 Wagons had the TD04L).

So around 340bhp could be on the cards (with a bigger TMIC or FMIC) and 550s. (440s will easily crack 300, but may, or may, not get to 340 that the TD05 is capable of. Should get at least 325bhp from 440s).

thanks for the input joz. 325 bhp would be a nice figure! i read too that uk wagons of this year have td05,s. sounds like ive got most of the bits i need (apart from fmic) to maybe get close to my target. think i will email andy f regarding the boost controller but i like the idea of having a mad max style red button on the gear lever with scramble boost lol.

You might be able to see which turbo is fitted for sure (e.g. could have been replaced by a previous owner), by shining a light at the compressor cover - "TD05H" should be embossed at the bottom. A little mirror on a stick (perhaps you could mug your dentist? lol), may aid in this...

I bought a modified tmic to fit to my 96 but I couldn't fit it as it fouled against the bulkhead and would have knocked when engine was running.

You won't get much past 270-280bhp on the OEM slanty job and the OEM 380cc's. If you happen to have a TD04L then it wouldn't be a problem. But you'd be 'wasting' a potential <c.60bhp (assuming a TD05H 16g is fitted) by not moving to a New Age TMIC (or indeed a FMIC).

But the effort required to fit a N.A. TM is 'not worth it' when compared to going for, say, a Hybrid GT Spec2 FM. FM much better for cooler ACTs/denser charge and therefore 'future proofed' for bigger turbos/injectors/remaps later on, as and when the inevitable modding bug REALLY takes hold!

That said, it would still be very wise to keep under 350lb ft on a 15-16yo car with the weakest TY752 'box. Plus of course being a UK, the engine only has (15-16yo) WRX-spec internals...

All that taken on board though, then your original statement of "300" would be the wisest power/torque to get mapped to. Don't forget, even that'd still be some c.92bhp, a massive 44%, more over std.! It will feel VERY noticable and you'll love it.

thanks m8. sounds even better when u break down the numbers lol 92 bhp over standard! that sounds like fun. ok so its seems i really need to get a fmic. and some wise words regarding the box and internals too. i think that would be as far as i would go with this particular car anyway. if i wanted more i think id get another car with an sti engine as a base for the stronger internals.

Quick Reply: can i crack 300bhp?
