What should I buy?
Hello people,
Advice urgently required.
I have owned 18 cars in the past 15 years and have never had an impreza.
2 years ago I had an e60 m5 with modified headers, pulleys remap etc with 580bhp. I sold it after 2 years due to 11mpg and an smg failure.
Everything I have owned has been quick but soft if you know what I mean. At the moment I have a merc diesel and want a impreza as a toy. But I want one that will rip my face off when I accelerate. I have seen loads for sale on auto trader but many look abused or tacky!
I'm sure someone on here may have something that will suit me if not I was thinking of importing from Japan as my mate brings in pajeros and has contacts at various auctions.
I have a £5 k budget and I'm not bothered about colour or number of doors just how quick and well sorted the car is.
Any suggestions welcome.

Welcome to the forums.
Do you have a preference on model? The newest car 5k would get you an STI bug other than that it will be a classic sti. Something to rip your face off you'll probably want more than 300bhp to do that.

Yes I think 300bhp plus
I would really like something around the 330-360 bhp Mark very quick but also not pushing the boundaries too far.
What condition is the P1 in?

if you want something that will blow yr *** away (after the mighty M5), £5K budget is not enough as you'll need something running atleast 550-600bhp.
look for a highly modded Version 6 sti type RA or simular
just my 2p worth from a fellow E60 M5 owner ,
P1 is great but not as focus as the type RA (i have a p1 as my toy as well )

I would say that you have 2 choices.
A Later spec standard or mildly tweeked Sti will have better build quality, be a younger car and have more potential for later mods whereas a classic is lighter, more raw and unrefined and a better drivers car (in my opinion). 5k would see you in a fairly heavily modded Classic, maybe a P1 or Type R, just depends wether you want something you can just get into and drive or want to play with and get ya hands dirty?

Right mate thought 350bhp in a type ra would be similar to the m5, but again it's not just about the pace it's the feel of the cars as well. I want back to basics. My daily drive is an ml420 or a 535d so I need some petrol in my life. I tried a boxster for 6 months and it's so timid it's up for sale!

mines getting a 2.35 conversion at the mom , after I had a forged 2.5 coversion(running 460bhp) blow a head gasket after only 3k miles (at a cost of £11K!!!), so now I want a bullet proof forged 2.35 installed.
good luck with yr search though

i should know as my old M5 is much quicker than my current E90 M3 !!(and the M3 is lighter).
but have to agreed if you get a light weight classic running 400 + .....it will be fun

Basically you aint going to get a well setup 400bhp classic for 5k, your going to get a standard internal/standard gearboxed car thats running at top end of reliability with the option of failures along the way.
Then you have the issue of rust, yep no matter what anyone says, a classic will rust around the rear arches and most of those sub 5k cars with a "quoted" 350+ bhp wouldnt have had any work done on that, plus 99% will be badly modified and go pop.
OP, 5k isnt a realistic budget for a well setup scoob, sorry to say that if you want something with a bit of fun factor, your going to have to put your hands a little deeper into your pocket as your average classic has too many weaknesses to run decent power reliably.
Example 1. engine is good for no more than 350bhp on standard internals, still that doesnt mean it wont go pop.
Exmple 2. Gearboxes are another weak spot, no matter what people say about the TY754 boxes, they become unreliable over 300lbs of torque, options of changing become expensive with a fully built 5 speed costing you your budget or going 6 speed at half your budget.
Example 3. The brakes really do suck, my astra diesel has better brakes than a 276bhp classic STI.
If you want to build a 400bhp classic monster then that will set you back around 10k on average, if you do it right that is, that excludes finding a none rotting car of course.
Best pound for pound car to buy would be a new age bug STI, UK cars were 2002 model year cars, JDM cars were 2001/2002 model year cars, both can be had for around the 5k mark, though note the JDM needs 100 ron fuel where as the UK needs 98 ron (but has less power).
These are also more tunable than the classics out of the box with the engines being good for well into the 400bhp figures if set up well.

Any classic shape STI is an import - and if you have £8k to spend and want a highly tuned car, they're probably your best bet (IMHO).
The fact it's an import is largely irrelevant these days - parts and servicing are no problem, even main dealers are more cooperative then they used to be.

Thanks for the help, due to the fact 5k may not be enough I have decided to throw £8k at the car and have a couple of grand in case some other modifications are needed. This always happens I try to buy a cheaper car I won't be that bothered about then I spend twice as much and I guarantee you I will spend thousands on extra mods over the next few months.
