Had a private message today from a new member. Username is OUZ.
Here is the message,

i read your posts and i want to say that you know subies. i live in Turkey and in my country parts are extremely expensive.
you are staying in England right?
can you send me some parts of subaru from there please.. with money of course
for example i can't find any ty754vbaaa parts or tranny here. no one uses this. 2 year ago, i bought and shipped it from japan and now i know that was a mistake because i can't find any parts.
i broke the 2nd gear wheel and the counter part of shaft... and i need those... can you find me?!
i know i'm asking some difficult **** but my car is at service for a month and i haven't got much money to buy a new transmission now. can you send me your email?

May well be legit but thought I'd post to see if others have had the same message.
Just a little strange getting a message like that from a new member.
Apologies if it's legit.

Matty.

He is probably in Nigeria spamming another 500 members, hoping for that one bite he needs in order to empty the poor saps bank account.

Just remember you only need to send £300 so that the funds of £10,000 will clear into your account, go on do it - he seems trustworthy enough.

You never know, could of been for real or am I just being a complete spacker.
Out of interest, how would that scam work ??
He sends me money to buy a gearbox (I actually have the parts he asked about), I use that money once it's cleared to buy parts, then I send parts to him.
Though pay pal ofcourse and not bank account...

The internet has a habit of making us all massive cynics! Surely as long as you paypal and withdraw the funds from paypal before sending then theres no problem? Perhaps he genuinely cant find the bits he needs. On the other hand maybe he is a retired somalian pirate looking for a new business venture!

I'm sure it's a scam, but was just interested to know how it was gonna work.
Maybe he'd ask for my bank details to send payment...

How's that car coming on anyway Matt ??

Fraudulent funds are used for payment which gets "clawed back" sometime later after you've sent him the gear of course ... you may even pay for his postage if you're good AFAIK Paypal is notorious for this albeit that it's never happened to me.

Harder to pull off if the buyer is UK based as the Banks take the risk of fraud after 6 days have passed.

IMO that one looks legit as it doesn't have the typical hallmarks. The only thing that is odd is that you don't appear to have an adverts for anything, so why does he think you can supply him with what he wants? This leaves one of two things; scam or someone who is a bit thick to use our sales section (neither are good to deal with).

Most Nigeriam scam mails assume they have purchased the item straight away. And always question stupid stuff that is already listed in an advert (like the price, make and model etc.).

Second, they will either insist on using their own shipping company, western union, or ask you to post it to a relation in the UK.

However; I've just noticed a visitor message in mattyB1983's profile:

Just incase you were wondering, this is actually a hairy biker from Macclesfield....go for it!

Anyway, if you have nothing to sell, then its a non-issue really. But personally I never sell overseas as its just pure hassle even if it isn't a scam.

Oh, yes and just to remind people who use paypal - NEVER use the gift option for buying items.

By the way his IP geo-location details resolve as Ankara in Turkey and appears to be pretty much clear on blacklist checks, so even if it is a scam, at least that bit is honest.
