Title of another post reminded me. I think this was asked some months ago, so apologies for repetition, but now that another winter is over, do the owners of bug-eyes find that the paint is as susceptible to stone chips as previously, or does it seem better?

Paint seems to chip a lot easier than on my98. Car is only 8 months old and there is already chips, in particular the side panels and doors

I think they use butter when they're mixing the paint....
Mark (the Wax Wizard) suggested that the paint is a lot thinner than on most cars, hence susceptibility to stone chips etc.

Mine has been fine. I've done 15,000 miles now, mix- some motorway, some a road.
Hardly a scratch on it, except car park injuries.
It's plastered in tar spots though. It's a lot of effort to clean them off.

WR Blue MY01 here done a little over 10000 miles and the paint is sh1te!!!! Took it up with the dealer (Monks Heath in Macclesfield although the car is a belgian import) and they just said that nothing could be done.Bloody fine lot of good they are! (Mind you I am a second class citizen to them cos I have a euro import!!!) I'm very tempted to write a letter to IM or even Subaru in Japan and see what they have to say. There's no way the paintwork should chip like it does.Have loadsa chips on the bonnet, skirts, doors, wings and I wouldn't mind if I didn't treat the car with care or do loads of motorway miles!
Anyone else wrote to Subaru about this?

i dont know, Subaru apply the thinest coat of paint possible to reduce weight and give us that extra 0.00000001 of a second advantage in the 0-60 time and everyone complains!
im thinking of calling my car 'the ol speckled hen'
IMO yes ITS CRAP

worst chips on the subaru wrsport lip spoiler attatched to front bumper, side skirt 'spats',and rear apron
terrible chips on bonnet and especially on the wings!! by those reflector things, but suprisingly none on the front bumper themselves.
spoke to my local bodyshop and he said that the paint is to thin on these new cars and the only way i can avoid it if resprayed is to have plastisiser(spelling?) added to the paint for the wings and bonnet which he wouldnt recommend as after time i.e 5+ years it will fade

Got two since Mid March, 1980 miles. I think they came when 1/ A motorbike overtook me at speed spraying debris in middle of road into my path and 2/ when a car overtook me when I was running in. I think the secret is to keep your distance from the car in front, but still, thats no excuse for thin paintwork.
I've also applied loads of polish on the front now, don't know whether that helps.

The paint on my '02 (1st March reg) is the worst I have ever had
There are more chips on my bonnet then at Harry Ramsdens!
Had seen a couple of them, but decided I'd give it a polish at the weekend...WTF!
It's only when I got up close that I realised how many small chips there were. The paint is far too thin.
What it needs is EVERY owner to all complain to Subaru... and have a protest that would get media attention (several hundred Scooby owners driving around IM HQ or something) Subaru wouldn't like to get bad publicity and might decide to do something!
Back in the real world I don't think Subaru are gonna do anything about the cr@p paint.

1,700 miles now - just a few small ones on the bonnet, but I try to keep a sensible distance from traffic in front. Agree though that the paint seems very thin - it's WR Blue.
Does it depend which colour you have?
The paint quality itself seems fine, and the finish is good (no orange peel) - just unusually thin.....

On my second bug-eye and both seem particularly bad on front wings infront of reflector thingummy-bobs and the mirrors.
The bonnets seem to be pretty hardy as i've got a few small dents from stones but the paint hasnt chipped.
Would there be a reason wht the wings and mirrors would be painted differently from the bonnet? Something to do with materials perhaps? The mirrors being plastic, the wings steel and the bonnet alluminium?
I put it to the paint experts to discuss...

2500 Miles, WR Blue and I've got chips on the bonnet,a couple on the lower doors and sills, I dont drive close to cars in front or spend much time on the motorway.
Still waiting for the front mudflaps to arrive that should have been fitted for delivery, this will reduce the problems with the doors and sills, Fax from IM this week states no ETA for the flaps into dealerships.
Steve.
