I've got a cdb which has just started to rattle on boost, the bearings are on the way out. What are these blocks worth with a knocking bottom end short motor only. is it worth buying the crank and bearings for £500 and sell it done

Only if you want to keep it, otherwise i'd say no as most that rebuild do it themselves and i think you will be lucky just to get your money back,as it always costs more than you think.

You cant just replace the crank and bearings if the car is knocking, you have to do the lot (full block clean, new modine etc) or it will just fail again a few hundred miles down the road.
