Question

went to santa pod yesterday for my first blast up the drag strip, the best time i managed was 14.89 secs @ 89mph, i think this is pretty poor for a scooby (standard turbo 2000) probably cos i couldnt get my starts right, almost stalled it a few times!

anyone else done the quarter mile and what times did you manage?

ps. scooby99(?), good to see you there, going back down on the 18th May?

dr lurve, only by a few tenths of a sec though yep that was me in the X plate. was really nerve racking on my first ever run, my foot was shaking on the clutch waiting for the green light, started to get the hang of it by my last (8th run) though, think ill be practicing in my local Asda car park before i go again!

must be tricky starting on a rubber mat, you did good. There were some monstrous cars out there, built exactly for that purpose (that green truck had 2 engines, or so I was told). The evo came in just below 13.

PS you were spotted in 'was it you'

I did 2 runs in a totally standard my00 with brimful fuel tank. First one was just to find out what to do etc. and got around 15 secs.

Second one was 14.5 and it felt like it took off prety well. I had a feeling that to get significantly faster I would have to start seriously abusing the car and since I was just there for a bit of fun I didn't try any more - my00 clutch prone to problems etc. Spent the rest of the day watching everybody else.

Supposedly in the early days of the Impreza one of the magazines ran 13.7 in a standard car during a test.

I've never done this sort of thing but maybe someone could tell me what it feels like? When you set a 14.9 do you think you were going quickly and the time should have been better than actually acheieved? I'm just trying to get some perspective.

F

PS make a mental note of cars mentioned if buying secondhand

I did a couple of runs well actually it was 12 runs in 31minutes and it was hot LOL

Well my best was a 13.051 at 104mph in my esscy cossie (not quite standard) my worst after stalling was a 14.7

It was cool and slaying Scooby Stu was fun

Im looking at my rev limiter its at 6500 at the moment gonna lift to 7000rpm so i can stay in 3rd and do around 12.8seconds

Have print outs if you wish to peruse

And nothing fell off after a dozen runs adn a 130 miles each way journey on the day

Went home from Nottm dingy in 1 hour and 14minutes which i think is quite good

Was good though

Floyd,

A good start feels like you have just been fired out of a sling shot. A bad start and the engine bogs down, rev's drop off and you merely pull away waiting for the rev's to build up again. Then its just a matter of keeping your foot down, changing gear just before the red line through 1st, 2nd 3rd and 4th.

Most disappointing thing about the standard UK turbo is that when you get to 4th gear you really struggle to maintain any acceleration and so the terminal speeds are pretty low.

For a 2wd car you have an additional problem of over cooking at the start and just getting wheel spin. This does not happen in the Scooby unless you are a hooligan with a large clutch budget.

You also have the guy next to you to watch getting slightly smaller - hopefully in the mirror but often through the windscreen!

Sir Huggy, that 205 would be a little bit modified would it?

roughly 200bhp fully stripped out ect hence i couldnt sell it?I learnt a valuable lesson that to many mods decrease the value of your car,i would never do that to my wrx, you can go to far!!

Cool

last month i got 14.6 secs and 95mph in my chipped S3.

Bear in mind the S3 weighs a ton and I have some rather large wheels on mine, so the result was not bad.

Had my car RR'd the other day and is putting out 248bhp with 243lbft

This is worrying, the scooby times posted so far a not that impressive My standard VTS does it in 15.3 @ 88mph and some of you guys are quoting high 14s for the scoobs. I assume it's kid glove treatment here??

I would like to hope with a mildly modified Impreza and a fairly brutal start that sub 14 is achievable - is this silly talk?

Saxoboy - I think you will need a highly modded Scoob not a mildly modded Scoob. Even the P1 as standard will struggle to break 14 sec. Not what they are built for - go for a Supra twin turbo or something with serious top end power for drag racing.

Surely thats wrong about the P1

A modified Calibra Turbo running 280-ish BHP (same as P1) was regularly getting 13.7 - 13.9's a couple of weeks back.

Bugger - really hoped the scooby would do better than that! Cossie got 11.9 (ish) from his modified (£1k spend so I'm told) WRX RA. Surely mild modification (about 260-70bhp) of a standard scooby would do high 13s?

For the record the Saxo will go well over 120mph - been through this on another thread a few weeks ago so please don't bother asking me to prove it, just trust me.

She'll hit the limiter in 5th given a long enough road so if you want to know find out the ratio's and do the maths. If you do, let me know the result BTW

Tyres are 195/45 15s and the limiter is 7400rpm +/- 100rpm. That's all I can remember, I'm sure the ratio's will be easy to come by. It's a MKII in case they changed them.

I think that the times quoted for the 1/4 mile are a little slow. Performance car recorded 13.72 and 13.2 for an STI. I think these kind of times are achievable but you probably have to be quite harsh on the car.

Just adding that the terminal speeds were over 100mph for both. So not as slow as they sound...

but with the Saxo it takes a downward slope
and 20 mins with your foot flat to the floor to hit the limiter!!

Most people will give their car more stick at the Pod than they ever do on the road so the times must be taken as real world. Just because a magazine gets some incredible time after trying all day with just a splash of the fuel in the tank, this is not representative of the cars real world performance - just pub talk. If anyone has ever been to watch these "Run what you brung" events you will see that 14's are not too bad times - I was watching a TVR chymera (sp?) getting in the 15's

Anything that runs in the 12/13 zone usually has a big engine and is heavily modded. The Scoobs would give great 0-60's but the 2.0 engine feels like it is topping out towards 90 in terms of acceleration. Things like 300zx and Supra are just getting going!

Still trackdays are a different kettle of fish I should imagine

Boost II well said

However i did expect more from the scoobs i thought high 13s but not 14s

I ran 13.2 all day long and a best of 13.05 which was cool and thats in a 330bhp Escort Cossie on 18's so not bad at all

Im looking at using 16s and lifting my rev limit a ickle bit to do sub 12.8 now thats a quickie
