Default Rebuild advice

Ok, where do i go from here

Obviously a strip down and check everything out to see what the possible causes of the previous failure could be.

Hopefully i will find out why,so that i can avoid a recurrence, as i don't want to accept that these things just happen, i believe there must be a reason.

So what should i do, and will i be able to reuse things like pistons, and the rods.

I think its only on number four so possibly only replace that rod, in the experience of others will there be damage to other parts and what are they.

Just trying to get a list together so i know what to look out for in the for sale section.

Or is it cheaper to just buy a complete bottom end, or just a crank and if so which one.

97 v3 type r

wiseco pistons
eagle rods
ect you all know the list off by heart so i won't bother.

Also think i'm going to go for a gearbox refresh and the longer 5th gear.

And front mount and have my turbo up rated / reconditioned vf34, ported wrapped headers and up pipe.

The mrs is going to love that lol.
Anything else?

Yes i know, i won't be doing anything for at least 6 months as i'm way too busy to deal with it now, just after peoples thoughts on which direction to go in.

Have a word with David at APi mate, he'll give you sound advice even if you're doing the rebuild yourself!

You won't go far wrong with a nice low mile newage STI lump. Proven capabilities from many guys on here.
Keep an eye on the for sale section, quite often see one in there for sale.
It's what I run in my V3 STI at circa 400, no complaints from me.

Echo the advice about newage engine. I'd never bother rebuilding a classic engine, much better to get the newage one.

Not even CDB/SCDB? I thought they were regarded as "the best"?

My reason has been,my engine has have low compression due damaged valve seat and this has been for me good reason get engine forget and add stroker.
Second reason,if you are fitting bigger turbo, you will loose spool and this 100cc will help little bit spool better.
Third reason for me has been, price against OE Rebuild.

To be honest i'm not a number chaser partly because i like to keep the car drivable and partly because extra bhp means other components get too stressed and i don't fancy going for a six speed i like the car the way it is.

I'm not racing or dragging, So around 300 is fine by me, if i inadvertantly get slightly more then fine, i had it running 320bhp before and thats plenty for me, i can do everything i want without the speeds getting stupid.

But i think i will go front mount so don't want it to become too laggy hence thinking about refreshing my turbo.

A bog standard 2.5 will make a super road car motor, but may push your clutch and gearbox to it's limits...

i am doing a 2.5 closedeck at the moment, wiseco pistons, manley rods, arp studs, etc....
i know isnt the best block to use but it will make a good road car as Dunx said and i will get the power that im looking for as well, so all depends what your plans are for your car bud.

Umm, not overly keen on the 2.5 my old 04 wrx has had it done and iv'e driven it, and tbh it has great torque on the straights and is quite fast but i think its a tad lacking in the bends it's more of a powerful cruiser than an urgent missile.

That may be due to the gearing and it being 150kg heavier, but i did a fare few miles in it when it was a 2.0l and i prefered it then even though it has 100bhp more now.

I think i'm leaning towards a 2.1 stroker, but if the bores are ok i may just fit a new crank.
