Lots of posts about this mate. As a short term fix, liberally spray white lithium grease under the damper boot and around the top of the strut. Are you sure your jack handle isn't touching the bootfloor?

I wouldn't just replace a shock for the sake of it, especially not just one side (as dunx said)
If it's a squeek it's probably rubber related, ie bush etc. Could be the top mount but could be any of the other bushes on that corner. It hasn't got uprated bushes has it? They can be noisey.

Guys mentioned it on here before my own 2005 wrx has this exact same problem- knocking from rear passenger side strut, if I choose the above short term solution off the white lithium grease just how easy is it to get where you would have to spray this stuff ie. under the damper boot and top off strut, is it an easy diy job once wheel removed ??
lastly did I read on s/net once that there was another cure involving several washers placed on the strut if so anyone know exactly whats involved ??
cheers guys

If you do a search you,ll find out whats involved, but basically it,s removal of the shock from the car then remove coil spring and dismantle shock, clean out old grease and refill with new. I decided not to bother as it is only a temporary fix.My car passed the MOT recentley with advisory on the knocking shocks so I,m just going to put new ones on before next MOT. Steve.

Okay thanks again for the info, I was actually asking about what would be involved in trying the white lithium grease method ie. can the bits be accessed easy enough without a major strip down ??
appreciatte you personally never had any joy with that particular method but would like to at least give it a try and as I say maybe even try the washers method if someone could advise whats involved ??

Anyone ??
Just came across this via a quick google search -
Mate, save your bucks, try this, remove the top mount apolstery and tripple nut cover plates get a 17mm tube socket on main nut hold with multigrip put allen key down the centre and wind the main bolt/pin anti clockwise, it will firm up. This should pull the top mount plate up firm and sop the rattle.
Thank me later overa couple of schooners.

on a skill level from one to ten how difficult for a non mechanic to strip and re-grease ??
