Classic v Bugeye opinions
Hey all,
I am sure this has been covered several times BUT I would like peoples opinions, esp from owners who has had both.
I currently have my first Impreza which is a MY95 WRX import. It has 48000 miles on the clock and it is currently running 263.6bhp, not much done to it.
I have been considering changing up to a bugeye, but I would like peoples opinions of both cars.
It would probably be a WRX bug I would be looking at as I do not think I could afford to buy a STI.
Driving wise, I do use the car as a daily drive and some weekend fun however I would like to track it in the very distant future.
I have been out and test drove a bugeye wrx, which was a bit of a dog. I was surprised, I thought I would either fall in love with it or hate it but I could not really say which i prefer. The bugs power was definately not has intense as my classic.
thanks guys

I used to own a 2000 GT in South Africa, a 1997 STi wagon in the UK and then a 2002 STi. I also bought a 1998 type R for a friend of mine and have driven that a fair bit.
I honestly prefer the bug. I think the classic looks a bit dated, the interior is bad and the drive is uncomfortable. Many will say for the road go for the bug, for the track go for the classic.
I am building my bug into a track car (slowly ).... but I think the bug has everything going for it. 6 speed, strong engine, quieter interior, better brakes, better suspension, etc, etc.
Having driven the type R and the bug back to back, I prefered the bug, I felt more confident in it....
The little bit of additional money is DEFINITELY worth it!!!

There are 3 main reasons why you shouldn't buy a bug.
They are :-
1- UGLY
2- UGLY
3- FUGLY !!!!
Lol !!!!!
But seriously, STI classics can be had very cheap now fella. A lightly modded classic STI is more fun than a bug, they just feel more agile, more responsive and a bit less refined.
Day to day the bug is probably the better car to use as it's softer and quieter, more refined. But for fun, STI classic hands down.
I don't want refinement, I want grin factor and my classic does that. But on the other hand my car isn't my daily drive.

i used to have a wrx bug with ppp, i like the looks and thought it was a good drive, i now have a 95 wrx wagon, i prefer the seats in my wagon, interior i like both, power wise my wagon is about the sameas my bug was but the classic is a bit lighter, my wagon chassis wise is uprated so cant really compare them but i remember the bug handling to be prettygood as standard, for me i like the way the newage cars look but seeing as you allready have the classic why not stick with it.

A bugeye wrx is a bit boring to drive. Feel very slow. Saying that if it's all you can afford then it's a good base for a vf30 and a remap for 300bhp at a later date. At least with the newage cars you can get open source remaps for less than half what it'd cost to remap a late classic.
I much prefer the bugeye sti (although I have jdm) over any classic I've driven. Not sure what I'd think of a uk sti as they are a bit underpowered but the wrx is certainly weedy.

A classic uk turbo on a 99/00 MY has 215 bhp and weighs 1,235 kgs
A Newage wrx has 215 bhp and weighs 1,385 kgs , so for identical power the bug has an extra 150 kgs of weight to carry . Yes it is more refined ,and maybe not as hardcore as the classic, but the fact is subaru were able to keep the general shape of the classic running for 7+ yrs,the bugeye lasted 2 yrs. Just my opinion, but from the pictures of the 2 cars above,if anyone thinks that the bugeye with its 'oddball' 3 in 1 hid lights looks better than the classic with its clear crystal headlights then they must have catarax in both eyes.lol

Hey Dazza, not that im biased or anything (owned 4 Bugs lol) I would say go for a Bug. However you culd help yourself loads if you can tell us your purse value? I mean if your looking for a 3k Classic STI, then you'l get an ok car, but as said they are getting old and they are generally more expensive to tune. Or 3k will get you a reasonable bugeye wrx that are cheaper to tune, but weigh more and arnt as nimble, but this is stuff thats easily sorted if you like a small project.
Tell us what you have to spend, this would help.
Two Bugeye's I know of on here that I think are bang for the buck, Grahams WRX @ £2'500 with subtle mods which is VERY much worth it imho. & Slowboys JDM STI @ £5'500 with low miles which is Excellent value too.
There are plenty more too, but as im not on the lookout for another car I havent browsed too much.

That is also the shape that won most of subarus rallies for them, including a couple of constructors championships. If you do a google search and read the press reviews from the release of the bugeye on 23rd August 2000,you will see exactly which model the motoring press quoted as having the look of a 99 toyota corolla from the front.

Money to spend is a unknown value at the moment. I have a very good classic so it would be a case of sell that n save like hell.
Don't get me wrong, I do love my classic and its solid with only 48k on it. If I kept it I would spend on it and upgrade and have it looking as new.
I just do not know if it would be better in the long run to spend the money I would on upgrades/respray on getting a newer scoob.
I suppose its a bit of influence from my Mrs to get a newer.
