Backbox or Straight Thru Centre Section?
I have been going back and forward with trying to find out the best option for which to replace.
I have a newage STi with PPP, but want more low end burble. I am looking at either replacing the centre section with a RCM straight thru pipe OR a RCM Back box.
I know I should get a whole new system but dont have the money for the inevitable re-map etc and since im happy with the power which one would be more beneficial?
If I were to do one or the other what would be the difference between the two?
PPP with RCM back box
OR
PPP with RCM straight thru centre section

Well I was just told that the classic exhaust systems have 3 sections and the newage has 4 which is different size. I dont want a whole new exhaust system, im just trying to find out whether a different back box or a new straight thru centre section will give me the biggest difference to sound.

Will either of them give me any performance increase? Keep in mind its a prodrive exhaust etc so replacing it with a straight thru and/or rcm back box is there a performance increase in anyway?

Backbox will make biggest difference at sound, but i would say with center pipe will make massive improvement at sound

my ppp came with a decat centre section already, i don't know if prodrive put it on or the previous owner, so worth a look under your car.
I wouldn't say it will give you a performance increase, however after the high 300's bhp the prodrive back box becomes restrictive, so an aftermarket one won't restrict the power as much.

Hawkeye exhaust is split into 4 pieces,
1. down pipe with cat.
2. Short section with cat (loftyman's now has decat due to ppp)
3. Resonated section (not a cat its a silencer can be removed for more noise)
4. Back box.
you will not get much if any more power from changing the back box or resonated section maybe 2-3 bhp if the RCM is very high flow but I doubt you would notice it.
Its the back box you wont to change for a crisper sound not the resonated, but you could do either, cheaper to do the resonated section but more beneficial to change the BB

Thanks Gonzo, I was told yesterday when I rang RCM that the newage cars have 4 piece ehaust system and thats pretty much what he ment.
Thanks for the replies, I think I will look at a centre section from RCM (The pipe before the backbox) and if its not giving the effect I want I will go with backbox too.

Why dont you try Hayward & Scott for the centre section they where doing them for £70.00 in the group buy, Even if thats finished if you ring them your get a good deal.
After all its only a bit of stainless steel pipe no need to pay through the nose
