Default Ok so fed up now, should i sell the scoob..

So im not sure how many will remeber the problems i had with coolant appearing below my engine on that floor panel bit
and it supposedly being the rad only, which cost me 360 to change...

anyhow ive been out to have a nosey before a drive, and sure enough its showing just above min on the expansion tank and the bottom of the floor plan is looking very wet again :|

also checked the oil to find it just registering at min
put about a litre of oil in and its gone up a fair whack but not at max...

after a small drive up the road to the local supermarket all i could smell on exiting the car was warm coolant

seriously fed up with it now, no trust in the car, it seems to be just hanging on..
it seems to have only done it after some spirited driving after a bmw on some country roads.. which is what it was doing last time
fine and no problems till you give it some stick and then coolant smell used to appear etc

the thing is i love the car, its so fun to drive, yet also so bloody relaxing
and i dunno how i could sell it on knowing its a time bomb so to speak
but then i really dont fancy the chances of a 1500-2000 quid bill

argh dunno want to do

o and a little off my own topic, had some twit in a tourag who decided to sit off the bumper of a learner driver on the a12, then slot himself into the space id left for saftey of the car in front of me in a lane approaching a slip road.
i shook my head, he was obviously watching for a reaction because then started doing some sort of regal wave in the rear view o.0 lol.....

when i drew up to him on a roundabout at the top of the slip road and stared across he started doing a **oooo im so scared*** time reaction with his hands lol... wtf?!

what a muppet...

sounds like you're having a bad day fella, me too, I went to change my front pads last weekend which is a straight forward enough job, has turned into the calipers needing a full refurb and costing a few extra hundred squid, also wont get the car back in time to bed the pads in for the first track day of the season which is doubly annoying.

Cars can be really frustrating at time and I appreciate that leaking coolant is potentially worse than needing some brake calipers refurbed, I still wouldn't get rid of my scoob

Time to crack open a couple of beers and forget about it for another day, as for the driver in the toureg, he'll get whats coming to him karma

see i wouldnt mind so much things like that , a couple hundred here and there for things, but when the heart of the car is seriously at fault :/

i did read up in the forum about the 2.5 but honestly thought id found a goodun, and also quite a bit of "it'll never happen to me" set in..
im doubly annoyed as im sure the bloke who sold me the car knew it had issues, and he got my completely reliable CTR off me... no wonder he gave me a decent amount for the private partex

Can you not see any signs of water leaking from anywhere, when my header tank leaked there was a white residue left along the path the water was flowing and dropping onto the exhaust causing rather a lot of steam at every junction.

nah its just wet all over the bottom of the floor pan, exactly like what it was doing before, from below the bottom rad hose, and the expansion tank has lost alot of coolant
last time one garage couldnt find anything one, and another said it was the rad at fault
(both recommended garages on here too)
it just seems to sit on the floor pan and drip out abit now and again

one of the garages did say coolant wouldnt get out from there less it was really high pressure meaning hg fault.. no idea
the car still runs fine and doesnt over heat, no other noticable symptoms either

the oil disappearing has worried me abit too

im not sure if the last garage did any other tests, they just said it def was the rad that was leaking (an obvious leak)
and i did keep saying i was worried it was a HG fault, and he repeated it was the rad

With loosing coolant i have similar problem and later we are discovered, problem has been on Valve seats(one valve seats has been damaged and due this we are get low compression on one one piston, our feeling has been HG or Ringland failure)

Hard choice, knowing what you paid, do you want to lose several K's swapping it out or spend several K's fixing it. Either ways it's gonna cost you, but the latter would leave you with a cool car

FB Tuning is your best bet. YHPM

Sounds like a coolent leak which has happend to a few cars over the winter due to pipes cracking or busting after Ice cold weather. Happend to me and I had to have the pipe replaced.

well they had the rad out and put a new one in, so would have hoped and dodgy pipes would have been fixed too

Depends where you got the work done from, there might have been more than one leak however a lot of garages don't bother looking after they find one..........and I have a funny feeling this will be the case with you.

Cheer up mate I am sure it'll be a minor

If the Garage you took it to diagnosed the rad as the problem, surely they are guilty of mis-diagnosis? I would take it back there and get them to look again.
If you have paid good money to fix a problem and it hasn't been done, then they have taken money off you for something you didn't need and potentially allowed the problem to get worse.
There may have been two coolant problems, one being the rad, but then the other fault should have shown itself aswell.
I would at the very least get it pressure tested somewhere else as it could just be leaking from one of the hose clips on the rad. Sometimes it can take a while for a leak to show up (only under high pressure) and it just looks like the origional leak.
Hope you get it sorted.

If you think your fed is bad mines a nightmare. Bought it in november had following problems.
Front wheel bearing went
Maf went
Petrol pump seal was leaking so replaced
Droplink broke
Air intake pipe spilt on turbo had to replace
Looks like ive got a coil pack going down now.
I think some problems were probably already there but ive sorted them all for now but im always in the dilemma of should i just get rid of it, but now ive mended them should i stick with it. I wanted to spend money on a remap, wheels, etc but spent on parts instead. So happy not the word.

Take the car in to have a sniffer test and compression tests carried out as this will point to a faulty HG. It could also be your heads raising up under heavy acceleration which is much more difficult to confirm but it does sound possible from what you have said about the leak appearing after a spirited drive.

just get it checked fella and dont worry what people write on here about hg etc.
im not saying it isnt but it could be something simple that costs pence.
there is no way of knowing until it is confirmed by someone looking.
this forum is great but if you believe everything you read,
if your interior light bulb goes you will soon believe it was caused by bottom end failure.

heh very true
id be surprised if the last garage didnt do a pressure test, i was in such a panic at getting away for my hols i didnt think to ask the question

and then 350 miles to Cornwall, and 350 back, stuck in all sorts of traffic (some for 60mins plus) there were no drama's at all and no coolant loss

ah well when i find out ill update the thread heh

just phoned up the people who swapped out the rad

supposedly the old rad was completely split and def needed replacing
a sniff test was completed with no signs of exhaust gases?
and a pressue test was completed supposedly

going to see if i can get a friend to give me a lift back tomorrow and drop it off tomorrow lunch time

touch wood its something stupid... that or whatever split the old rad has caused the new one to go?

just a thought.. please shoot me down heh

the expansion tank was showing low a few weeks back so i topped it up
to find after a drive it was showing quite high, above the max anyhow

so then i take it on a pretty spirited drive and when its nice and hot, if it got to the top would it spit aload of coolant outta the top cap/bottle somehow?
but enough so that it then drops to the min mark next time it cools down nicely

just a random thought i had after dropping my car off today :/
as well as the coolant was not only just in the floor panel bit of the engine bay, it was also abit over the fan bracket etc

anyhow i get to call them tomorrow to find out if they have found the cause
