Default jerky steering and squeeling noise?

hi all

Just looking for a little help. My sti5 when its cold started has notchy jerky steering at low speed manouvers and there is an intermittent squeeling noise from the engine bay as i turn the wheel. Once warmed up all this disappears and its service as normal.

In the recent cold spell it was squeeling continually for about 2 or 3 mins.

Pump
belt

or both

just sounds like the belt slipping mate, which in turns stops turning the pump, which makes the steering heavy. just tighten it up a bit, should sort it.

Yep, as above it'll be the belt needing a tighten. Funnily enough the mrs was complaining of the exact same thing on her classic, tightened it yesterday and the steering feels perfect again from cold.

It's only two 12mm bolts on the tensioner that moves the alternator. Just slacken the locking one and tighten the one that'll pivot the alternator to tighten the belt, then lock it off again.

Two tips: DON'T overtighten, do it a bit at a time so as not to put too much force on the alternator bearings.

If it's been doing it a while, think about a new belt
