Default driveshaft failure with pictures

my rear n/s driveshaft joint failed yesterday on the way home after doin my food shopping.
i've fixed the problem today but thought i would post up pics of the failed part as i've not heard of a joint going quite like this before :-

i then held the back part of the break together as it was the only part that still fitted:-

Wow I've not seen that before, I'd expect that to happen as a result of a savage launch not on the way home from shopping

aparently its usualy the cage inside that goes.
it had been making a small knocking noise occasionaly on accelleration which i intended to investigate this weekend. i thought it might have been a wheel bearing, but obviously not !

the car originaly was automatic. at some point it was coverted to manual, and then a low ratio RA box was fitted. so its current setup delivers more power to the rear driveshafts than it would have had in the past. all i can think of is there was a weakness in manufactue which the cars current setup made fail
