Question Coolant level Indicator?

After having a hose suddenly 'pop' off from the rad (clip failure) whilst driving into work the other day ...luckily i'd parked up & noticed the water/steam from under the car so no harm done ...I wondered if any Impreza has ever had a coolant level indicator/sensor in the expansion tank? or indeed any Subaru ...Forester/Legacy/Outback included?

Level would be useless anyhow,as you could have the engine emptying itself almost totally before the light would come on (just like the stock oil pressure sender, If you ever see that lighting up the engine is toast already.

Maybe something could be made from a pressure sender mounted in the top hose.
A hose (or rad) bursting would give a drastic drop in pressure in an instant, long before the coolant tank would be empty.

Well, my car had zero coolant by the time i had parked up & the temp gauge needle hadn't moved (double checked), so there's obviously a period of time you can run without any coolant in the system ...although probably not long!

If the sensor sits in the bottom of the expansion tank then it will detect water loss at about 1l ...so you should be ok with another 5l in there?

It does indeed appear no Subaru model runs a coolant level sensor, although plenty of other marques do, so ill have a look at the local scrappy to see if anything can be 'made to fit'

Like I said, coolant pressure would be better.
In theory the coolant level would only work if you have a leak in the hose from radiator to reservoir. If the hose from reservoir to engine, or from reservoir to turbo split the coolant tank would empty itself completely before you get any warning.

If you fit a pressure sensor ANY large leak would be almost instantly visible.
Maybe you could use a regular coolant temperature adapter liker this, combined with a boost gauge??

Seeing as most coolant systems are pressurised to 0.9 to 1.3 bar,and turbo pressure gauges are also available in that range.
