Default brake setup

whats a decent brake setup to go for to fit classic sti behind 17inch alloys? Capable of upto 400bhp. Or will standard drilled and grooved discs with decent pads enough?

AP Racing 6 Pots & 355mm Discs with Ferodo DS2500 pads - Front
Twin-pot conversion with grooved discs & Ferodo DS2500 pads - Rear
Goodridge hoses all round

Not sure of your intended use for the car but I know when I go out, I like to be able to stop as quickly as I can, time after time after time.

A change of calipers/discs/pads highly recommended.
  • STi Brembo Calipers if you can pick them up for decent money and you have wheels which clear them
  • K-Sport Calipers on a budget
  • AP Calipers if you want to fit the best

I have a set of AP 6 Pot calipers breaking from my car complete with discs + pads. PM if you're interested.

On my 98 classic, running around 400/400, I have Godspeed Brembos at the front, (unlike standard Brembos, they DO clear WRX 17" whels), and their 330mm two-part discs, which Ian guarantees against warping. Kevlar pads.

At the rear, I have STi Brembos with the STi discs off a newage, and standard pads.
The rears were fitted using Godspeed conversions.

I have also had the brake bias mod done, and braided brake lines all round, makes a difference.

Mine stops dead flat, no dive and VERY quickly.

Hi
No the standard sized set up wouldn't be suitable for your power if you were going to use all of them 400 horses !

Drilled discs I would steer clear of as they will crack with hard use , every make will , so I would fit grooved only discs.

With 17" wheels your choice of brakes is quite big depending on how much you want to spend , you may be restricted fitting some brakes such as the STi gold brembo's as these need quite a lot of offset in the spokes to clear them.

The first port of call would be larger discs retaining your existing 4 pot calipers , we make a 335mm 2 piece grooved disc and bell kit along with larger than standard pads so you get more pad material on the discs , this kit comes with mounting brackets to move the caliper out to accommodate the larger discs , and is a very good , powerful conversion as long as your 4 pot calipers are working properly , with no sticky or seized pistons
We can supply you our larger 335mm kit along with bluestuff NDX or Ferodo DS2500 pads for £550 including vat and delivery.
When these discs wear down , you retain the alloy bell and just change the outer rotor , these are then £295 with a set of nuts and bolts.

Next step if they fit would be the STi 326mm discs with the Gold brembo calipers , you would need about 70mm gap between your discs and spokes to fit these though , most 17" wheels on the classics won't fit over these without a spacer , which then might give you problems with arch clearance on the tyres.

Up from there would be the K sport kits , coming from China/Taiwan the cost will obviously be lower than the european kit such as AP or Brembo , The new design of calipers have made the kits better , the early calipers I thought were a poor design , we have reconditioned a few of the early sets.
I can supply you the K sport kits , price would be the same as everyone else selling them , with new 2011 prices to be listed shortly , but they have gone up from last years prices.

We are in the middle of testing our own CNC billet 8 pot calipers to use with our own discs , these kits will be priced around £950 ish complete , and you will be able to have the calipers any colour you want , will be slightly more than the K sports , I am having the caliper bodies made by another engineering company to my specs so I'm paying UK prices for the labour , not a pound a day wages over in asia lol .
My calipers will certainly more than compete on spec and quality.

From there your into Brembo and AP radial mounted 4 or 6 pot kits , 330mm kits starting around £1150 going to £1400 for a 335mm kit with AP 7040 6 pot calipers.

It really depends on your budget .

If you want to talk various options through , please ring me on 01656 723060

Cheers Ian

thanks Ian, you've got my custom! In due course. Il go for the 330mm disc and ferodo pads. What about the back brakes? That reminds me, i have a seezed piston on the front. Any ideas how to release? Cheers

The seized piston can usually be squeezed out by removing the pads and blocking the other three pistons with bits of wood etc, then putting pressure on the brake pedal, engine running to get the air reservoir vacuumed.

I've put STi Brembos on the rear of mine, Ian's kit uses thicker brake shoes for the handbrake and an adaptor to bring the calipers in line with the discs you buy with the Brembos.
Plenty of scrappers doing the Brembos now and they DO fit under WRX17" wheels. I got a set two years back for £200 including two decent discs, delivered free.

As Jeff say's , you can move the sticky piston , if you have one piston sticking , leave one pad in place with the pistons that are free , take the pad out and put it in sideways to stop the 3rd movable piston from coming out , and have someone press the brake pedal slowly to force the sticky one out , just make sure it doesn't pop out all the way or you will have to bleed it , if you then remove the caliper off the car , remove the disc , and bolt the caliper back on , to hold it steady , remove the dust cover off the piston , and clean the piston face with WD40 and a scouring pad , you will be able to see the condition of it then , if its rusty and pitted , it would need changing otherwise it will leak.
It might just need a clean to sort it out.

Rear brakes can be swapped for the 2001 - 2007 WRX 290mm discs and 2 pot calipers , or as Jeffs car with the 316mm discs and Brembo gold 2 pot calipers , we offer fitting kits to fit either set up on your car , the Brembo is a bit more involved as you have to change the handbrake shoes to the special thicker ones we designed.

Hope this helps
Cheers Ian

Still relatively easy job with the kit, though, and they look and work well. Gave the handbrake mechanism a good clean up and copper greasing before refitting the discs.

Mine WERE gold, but I re-did 'em red complete with Brembo stickers.

glad i bought up this subject! My wheels are 17 bk racing. The standard sti calipers look really close as it is. Im sure id get a good price for wheels if i have to though, not my choice in wheels anyway.

I was lucky, really, as I like the WRX wheels anyway, and had a set offered at a dealers that someone had PX'd new for some STi ones, they sold them to me for what they gave.

I then swapped them on again for some bronze ones. They clear the STi Brembos at the rear, and Ian's Brembos at the front.

Doesn't look like those fronts are available now though

Yes, mate. Google Impreza breakers, comes up with a dozen or so hits, also keep an eye on e-bay.

GradeA are pretty good, but not always the cheapest.

Here you go: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Subaru-Impreza...item43a4bc16cb

Ian can probably do discs and pads too.
