Default Scoobynoob - Hopefully swapping for a WRX this weekend!

Hi all,

New to Impreza's and 4wd in general! around 6 months ago I had to let my '96 BPU Supra go as my girlfriend was expecting our first child and a Supra wasn't exactly an ideal family car, so I put the feelers out on Pistonheads looking for anyone looking to P/X/Swap with my Supra, I found a 2006 Toyota Corolla T-Sport compressor and done a straight swap with the guy for my Supra.

6 months and and my daughter is 3.5 months old and I'm finding clambering in and out of a 3 door with a baby seat a right chore, so I decided to set about finding a more suitable replacement with 4 doors.

Put my Corolla up for sale...
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2345067.htm

Put my preferred P/X' in the ad and the offers started rolling in...

At first I was in talks with a guy from Norwich who owned a 2001 bug eye WRX with some nice mods, tracker, cat-back, TE37's, STi spoiler etc.
He was onboard, then he wasn't, then he was again and now he's not.

Had a few various offers since but the one I found most interesting was this, a 2003 '52 Blob eye WRX.
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2222666.htm

He's not the best at taking photos it seems

Has a few nice mods and extras, the owner is only down the road and he wants to do a straight swap for my Corolla in the link above.

I know the carbon/effect fins aren't an obvious choice, I'd probably leave them until I'd fitted an STi spoiler then see how they looked, they should come off easily enough though.
Second was the exhaust, looks like it sticks out a little too much, also, I thought the Impreza exhausts came out at a slight angle?

Do you think it's a fair swap?

Thoughts and comments appreciated

Kev

Hi Kev

The black WRX looks tidy in the pictures but they say very little about the mechanical quality of the car beneath the shell. Personally, I'd say that if you are happy that the car has been maintained well and if you have enough knowledge of cars to establish in your own mind that you're not about acquire a heap of trouble, then if that's what you fancy go for it, as it's ultimately your choice. Exhausts vary and judging by the picture that exhaust looks to have a small up sweep which is probably about as much as you're gonna get with a tail pipe of those proportions lol.

regards

Tim

Keep the Corolla, your litte 'un will soon be able to get out by herself.

Wow, not alot of love for that WRX then, is it because it's not an STi?
I'm not sure I can afford to insure an STi tbh, one of the requirements of the insurance for a WRX was that it must have a tracker, so I'm either limited by the Impreza's that have them or budget for a £300 installation.

Bit bored of the Corolla TBH, there's very little you can do with them in terms of performance, thought something with 4wd and turbo could be fun to own and practical at the same time, don't get me wrong, I'm happy to take your comments and criticisms of the above car

I have no cash to put towards the car

Sorry I hadn't finished with my above post and the mobile version of theis site won't let me edit

I was going to say I don't have any further cash to put towards another car, I'm limited by what I can get for the Corolla or what I can swap it for and tbh, just searching Pistonheads for STi's under £7k is slim pickings, trying to find a tidy example with average miles for that money there's not mmuch at all...
There's a tidy looking bugeye near me at regency specialist cars in Tyneside Autoparc for £7k, at a push I may be able to lay my hands on some extra cash depending on what sort of P/X deal they gave me for my Corolla, other thing is, I've never been a massive fan of the Bugeye's I do however think they look massively better with Morette's

With regards to mechanics I'm fairly capable, most of the aftermarket parts and servicing on my Supra were taken care of by myself.
Taking a good friend of mine along with me to see the WRX, he's a very good mechanic too, was going to get him to drive behind me in the Corolla to look for smoke on boost etc. After a thorough static check.

UK STI's come with trackers fitted so no need to pay for one, and its worth checking out the insurance section

there are a great many main stream insurers that dont want a tracker, Admiral for one, and specialist through this site too. The car looks clean but as said its all about mechanics, certainly Black Impreza's sell as well as any....I would say though i think if your patient you could get a car of this spec for around 4k.....so a little less maybe, but have no idea whats your is worth...looking at it its your choice....your looks like more car; newer, lower mileage etc

The guy reckons the car has never wanted for anything, says he has tons of receipts to prove frequent fluid changes and the recent service and cambelt change, says it drives well and pulls smooth and stong, no noises to speak of either.

I've never got a decent quote from Admiral, Elephant (part of the same company) used to be decent but in recent years I've found their quotes to be terrible!
The past couple of years I've used Sky insurance and they've always given me both great quotes and mod coverage I haven't found anyone who can beat them tbh!

Phoned 2 garages local to me this afternoon, one regarding a bugeye STi for £7k and the other a blobeye STi for £8k
Both garages offered me only £5.5k as P/X for mine.

Just been offered a nice red WRX on an '03 with box, cat back and STi spoiler, recent cambelt and fsh with 63k as a straight swap.

Also an Evo V!

See if they will give you 5.5k Cash no trade, then use the cash to bargain some despirate sole on here or piston heads for his WRX. Still think if your worrying about insuring an STI you wont like the genuine cost of owning the Scooby. Reliable...i would say yes, but money pits (upgrades etc) I would say a VERY BIG YES.

If I'm going to do that I might aswell take 5.5k through my PH ad mate.

I can get £5.4 through webuyanycar.com

With regards to running costs it wouldn't be a great deal tbh as I do only around 4-5k a year, I have a transit that I use for work and I can use it outside of work if I want to.

Mods wise admittedly it probably would get addictive, it always does! But I can control that.
