Default 93 wrx type RA

Ok, basically this is my first scooby, few bits on it that I'd like to know everything about, like the water injection? Am I right in thinking that it's mainly for when your stuck in traffic? And then the 5th injector, I was told it was to help minimise lag? Then the closed deck block, is that so it's a bit safer to tune? Basically I'm trying
To figure out weather it's worth spending good money on it and getting it mint or using it as an everyday car until I've saved up for a better one? Love the car so doubt I'll be in a rush to sell it anyway! Just after a bit of advice and info on them.......

Doesn't have water injection.
5th injector isn't used.
Tuned safely any of the subaru blocks are good it's the internals that matter imo.

What my car doesnt have water injection?
It does, as it says water injection on the button and when u press it water comes out and drops over the ic! What was the point in putting on the 5th injector if it ain't used?

Intercooler water spray not injection,injection would be inside the engine
5th injector was for homologation purposes i believe

I/C water spray is used when you're giving the car a blast and is controlled by the ecu,the manual button can be used if you're stuck in traffic but i've never seen the point of it really.

Oh so it does automatically dispense? Will do alot more. Research into to it all when I get on a pc! Hard work on a phone! Just trying to get a handle on it all! So many different models it's confusing!

Not on the early ones? I have it on my version 2 sti and I'm sure it only works when you press the button Not that I've checked mind you I can't see the ECU doing it on the older ones.

You might be right, I haven't had mine long and to be fair I don't know that much about it yet, which version is yours? I thought auto water spray was evo territory

I/C Spray is manual Had it on mine for a while, whilst mapping it reduced temps by about 1 degree for at least 5 seconds and is good for about 20 squirts before it runs out lol I binned mine when I fitted the front mount and used the space for an enormous RCM cone

Hi James, First of all, if it's in a good shape overall, i say make it mint and keep it. These cars are quite rare (especially mint ones). These were essentially the base cars for the Group A rally Subarus. Take a look at www.type-ra.co.uk as well, quite a few RA owners hang out there.

On the road car it does nothing, its totally useless tbh.

The early cars have the weakest internals, the block may be strong but those pistons still come out of the side of them, closed deck or not (in other words you can tune them but only so far before they have a catastrophic failure and its an 18 year old car so you need to think about that too)
Then there is the gearbox and clutch, the brakes are really pathetic etc.

Basically no its not worth throwing money at, save up and get a better one later on then scrap this one, keep the cdb and upgrade the internals and put it in a "better" car, or just go new age STI, much stronger and not that expensive

It's pretty clean as it happens, needs a little bit of paint on the front but it will be going in to be done soon, it's on 98 thousand km! Clocks ain't been changed since it was imported, so what's that bout 50 k?

id say the the 08 sti has the weakest pistons tony lol.

dont forget some early cars have forged internals - his might - its the right year.

Mine's a 1998 Type R



To the OP

Mileage is about 61000

I had a similar situation where I was trying to get more out of a 93 WRX and when I looked at the cost of everything just to make 300bhp it wasn't worth it as not only would you have to buy the mods but,as Tony said,the car is very old some of the standard bits may need replacing.
So I just went for a facelift version Impreza that already had 300bhp so I'm happy with that (for the mo )
