Default Tyres and traction

Hi guy's,

I have my wrx booked in for a tyre to be changed, i am just changing 1 because the others are well within legal limits, now the garage has just phoned (ATS) to say that there is a problem with changing just 1 tyre and apparently if there is a 3.5mm difference between treads this can lead to a problem with my traction control and an expensive repair bill. Personally i think he's just fishing for me to buy an extra tyre but you just never know, what do you guys think.

Many thanks

You should change atleast the front two at the same time or the rears together for this reason.
Personally i always do 2 together are they the same tyre ? (make ,tread pattern)

they are not the same make, i could stretch to 2 tyres but i am always skeptical when bigger companies tell me something (got stung by kwik fit many years ago).

Does it have traction control ?

Can you source a good used tyre locally ?

LOL

dunx

P.S. Ideally you should fit all four tyres together, a pair at one end isn't much better, than a single tyre IMHO.

its better to do them in 4s , but i think the tracction control comment is aload of bollox tbh.

ask them to tell you how a traction control system works to explain their comment

They are correct (unfortunately).

You should replace each axle pair together otherwise the diff will be overworked because the wheels will be turning at slightly different speeds.

You can have a couple of mm difference front to rear. I think the centre diff can cope better.

Nothing to do with traction control, though. Obviously the car hasn't got it!

Also for the best handling/braking etc keep the same brand/model on the same axle left to right. No point having a good handling car if you mess it up with bad tyres choices. Not so bad having differing brands front to rear, so long as the rears aren't cheapy unknown brands (even if they are new).

Also it helps to know what car you got, then we can confirm BS on ATS's statement..... as there are not many Imprezas with traction control (only fitted on 2008 onwards).

ATS, Kwikfit etc. will screw you on the price, try http://www.camskill.co.uk/ they deliver very quickly.

Should only be about a tenner to fit.

me again

went to ats to get my tyre fitted but he refused to do so because it was only rated V and my 52 fugly should have Y rated, according to him it would be against the law for him to put on the tyre.

Now as far as i know it may affect your insurance with lower speed rated tyres but i dont think it's a motoring offence, could be wrong.

What does puzzle me is the fact that they contact me to let me know it will affect my non existant traction control but fail to inform me that the tyre i have ordered cannot legally be put on my car.

Money refunded, going elsewhere

If you have a wrx then your top speed is about 137mph so V rated are ok, think its 148mph on the standard STI and 155 limited on the PPP.

did try to explain to him that my top speed was below the V rating but he informed me its how you get there, my car doesnt trickle along, dont claim to be an expert but the fact i can get to 60 a few of seconds faster than a family saloon would affect the tyres.

Just go somewhere else. I use the tyre place thats in Thorne, they just get on with it and do what you want. I did two at a time, but within a month or so as i couldnt quite manage all four at once.

Or just take your wheel to ats and say "put that tyre on this please, its for a fiesta"
