Modding at 80000 miles?
Hi all
I have an 03 WRX which is totally standard apart from a few styling bits. My question is should I start modding on an 80k engine or am I not going to get as much benefit with a higher mileage car? The car is regularly serviced and has not missed a beat. I'm not looking at anything too significant just remap, exhaust etc to get to 260-270bhp.
The car is my daily driver and I have covered 20k in 15 months however this should be reducing to about 12k per year and I am looking to run it for a good couple of years yet.
What do you all think? Any advice gratefully received
Thanks
Gary

shouldn't be too much of a problem, as said above
if you wanted to go belts and braces, upgrade your fuel pump, clean injectors/new filter, check your clutch/brakes/suspesion, the list goes on and on................

Many moon's ago I started modding an 'STI' at 89,000 miles, boosted it to the limit and then went on to 125,000 miles before I sold it. It was still as good as new, it's all down to how you drive it and oil changes every 3000 miles.

had my 03 wrx mapped yesterday, 80,000 on the clock, f/s/h. must say after driving it all day its worth every penny, car goes like fu*k. go for it get it mapped. mines around 280bhp now, decat exaust, panel filter and big incooler. Ducan done mine, he drives to you and spends 2-3 hours out driving with you getting the car running right.

I took my UK Classic from 260bhp to 313bhp at 80k miles. I ran it to 111k miles when i sold it and last i saw of it, it had 120k and still going
In fairness, your car could let go with a power increase at 10k miles or 210k miles or never - modding - always keeps you guessing

Here we go, bought my 03 WRX new in May 2003, first one around my way! LOL
2004, first mods and upto 270bhp. Have had a couple of mods and maps since with the car now at 100,400 miles and supposedly 330 bhp. Every time I take it to RCM for a service, Olly always comments on how it feels nice, etc for its age. As above, if the car has been looked after and is treated with mechanical sympathy it will be fine.

That's the crux. Without stripping the engine to know its present condition how long its lasts is down to guess work....and luck.
As the car gets older and gathers more and more owners in its history, the question of the condition of its unseen internals becomes more questionable. There is a simple term and rule of thumb that more power=more wear. So its down to how worn that engine already is (or the gearbox, diff, clutch, etc) current wear will be down to how its been driven and serviced over its entire lifespan.
On the flip side, you can take the viewpoint that what is going to happen will happen anyway, just upping the BHP will make whatever failure happen a little sooner. If you are willing to accept the risks and costs of the worst case scienario (engine throwing a rod, for example) and put a few bob aside just incase, then go ahead. But if you are strapped for cash, maybe better to think twice.
