I was dawdling up to the Malton meet ( Pistonheads ) and a savage bird lept out and head butted mine, the crazyy b*gger must have been doing 70 mph at least , as it cleared the car behind .
Smashed my number plate into pieces, not a mark on the FMIC.
But it does have one mark from a rock that fell off a truck on the M62.

depends if yoru lucky or not, i do know a couple of folks who have ad to replace cores due to impact damage and no mesh protection for it.
personaly i'd mesh it to be safe, plus i think without it it looks unfinished

You'll end up running a fine line between blocking the air through the intercooler, and thus dropping its efficiency, or "might as well not bother".
The two extremes are a fine mesh, or a coarse one. How much experimentation arfe you willing to do to see which ones have no effect on the working of the i/c?
And TBH, stones, if they are big enough, would damage a mesh and maybe the i/c behind it too, as would a large enough animal/bird.
Mine has no protection and will probably stay that way.

If you have a quality FMIC it is well enough designed and strong enough to handle any road debris thrown up. In years of supplying these I only know of one that has been holed by road debris. Now a badger is a different matter but the grille wouldn't make any difference to that.
No grille required.

I commented on another thread that I would use one, however me & a couple of friends go for blasts around the Lake District which is usually around a 150 mile round trip. Most of the time were pushing hard and inevitably you get a lot of stones kicking up on your car when you are following someone.
If you dont do this then there is probably no need, if you do follow at reasonably close quarters whilst out playing then it should be a must

No need to spend £1000 on a front mount intercooler kit. Proven, quality Hybrids with good power outputs are priced between £325 and £395 for complete kits. Professionally fitted for a fixed £185.
If you guys want to spend money on grilles, it is your money and you can spend it how you like but like I said above, in all my years of involvement with Hybrid kits I have only come across one that has been badly damaged by road debris and that was a lump of wood thrown up by a wagon. Others that have been damaged are notably one which caused serious structural damage from hitting a badger and at least one other from hitting a deer
