Question Why did UK Impreza's get the 2.5 while the JDM's stuck with the 2.0 engine?

Was this to do with the rules of rallying?
Heard so many times that the 2.5 is a weaker engine...

Because the Japanese know and understand that their customers will modify their cars, so they provided them with a strong base engine to do so.

The UK branch decided the 2.5 with its chocolate pistons was more than suitable for us and that we dont like to modify our cars.

Well, thats what I like think now away now that my own 2.5 has recently let go

The yanks got em first, and suffered all the nice problems with the 2.5's first
The JDM cars are 2ltr because of the rallying and homoglomation(sp) rules, the 2.5's were given to the rest due to emissions regulations, more cc = get away with more co2, simples

as TB says it simply down to homologation regs and min. quantities - the 2.5 is not compatible with FIA rally regs

To be honest their was always a way around emissions Litchfield managed to create a report for the 2.0L to get it through euro 4 and even I managed to get my cars thrugh euro 4 as a one of emissions test. Mitsi uk do exactley the same thing as any importer would esva test etc so I am not sure why subaru UK didn;t just go down this route.

Granted you are correct, but the work involved to get through Euro 4 was immense. I know it took Iain months to achieve this with a correct model report on the hatch. The emission regs are very very strict.

Compared to Subaru UK though Litchfield are minnows. So it might have been immense for Litchfield but if they bothered to do it and could do it, it doesnt say much about the capabilities of Subaru UK. Thats both with a spanner and common sense as Im sure it would have been worth it for the warranty claims alone and if they knew about it in America they have no excuses.
