What does this sign mean?

We all know that round, red bordered signs with too low numbers in mean legally enforced speed limits.
But, sometimes, you see a rectangular white sign, black bordered, with the words "Max speed 50mph" in it. Are these legally enforceable? or are they just a recommendation?

Just a recommendation and are (apparently) aimed at HGV's and the like. You will only usually see them on sharpish bends like on motorway sliproad interchanges.

(I'm certain I'm right about that 'cos I got that question in my mock IAM Advanced Test and passed )

Thats good. There are some of those signs on the A1, 3 miles south of Sandy. I normally do 70mph (cough) along that stretch. They've now put cameras in, and at the weekend i went past at 65mph not knowing the cameras were there. Didn't notice a flash, but was a bit worried cos if it were legally a 50 limit then i might get booked. Much reassured now. thanks

Too right Ian
Next question...
On the M1 round where the big new signs are being installed (Leicester down to Northampton) there are a few yellow background / black text signs saying "Max Speed 50".
Are these enforceable? There's no repeater signs and often I can't see an end / NSR sign to finish. Obviously there for when there are people working on the signs but I wonder if it's safe to ignore them 10pm on a Sunday night?
Chris.

Chrisb,
I would also be interested to know that about the M1 max 50 signs..
a couple of times I have slowed down only to have everyone else fly on by me totally ignoring them etc..

Last night I saw a "Max Speed 40 SLOW!!" along a road that has just recently reopened after 10 weeks of bridge repairs. Unfortunatly as I knew this road like the back of my hand I didn't take much notice and went over the newly repaired bridge only to discover they'd created a bloody ramp and I was momentarily airborne!
Stupid thing is the road was never like this before the "repairs"

They have these signs on the M5 bends at the north end.
Pretty sure they are advisory and not legally enforceable.
However, if it's a 70 legal limit, with 50mph white signs, you can bet the police will take a dim view if they catch you exceeding 70...

Again - pretty sure these are advisory...
I tend to see them in rural villages, where the enforcable speed is 40, but there is also a yellow sign saying "max speed 30".
Don't hold me responsible though if you do any damage to your licence!!
