Default Space-saver tyres and snow theory

Got a puncture a few days ago, so have been running about on the space-saver wheel.

Since its been snowing here, I wondered what the result would be in theory if you were to put 4 x space-saver wheels on for the snow?

I reckon they'd be pretty damn good. Old fiat panda 4x4s were the stuff of legend, with their skinny tyres getting through anything.

Anyone tried it?

<goes off to ebay to source some space-savers>

too hard a rubber compound I recon... plus ltd to 50mph so once you clear the snow you'd have zero grip

Yeah, I was definitely thinking along the lines of snowy roads only. Wouldnt want to be trying them out on a properly gritted/salted road.

You've only got to see the tyres that the WRC cars use in Finland etc. to see that narrow tyres are better. (Albeit, with lots of studs!) Being narrower, there is more pressure exerted on the surface, by the tyre.

The tyres are narrow because they are designed to cut through the snow so the studs can bite into the ice beneath, which is where the grip is. One of the reasons that Rally Sweden is one of the fastest rounds of the WRC.
