New STi saloon - 1st road test

It's dead in the water ................... the £33,000 price tag ensures that.
My Honda Civic delivers more Torque, at 2000 rather than 4000 RPM ..... and cost me a smidgen over half the price. It's also better built, has more equipment, and is by far cheaper to run, insure and loses much less in value.
The STi .... for the man who hasn't moved on .... it's so far behind the times that it's embarrassing.

Agreed - Especially when Mitsubishi have recently knocked £4800 off the list price of the EVO. The FQ-300 is now £25,499

You're all in denial ..... so was I until I saw the light.
The Honda Civic holds its value far better than any Subaru .... I take no pride in saying that, it's just the absolute truth.
If I want to turn my climate control temp **** up/down in the Honda, I know I am touching something of quality ...... try the same thing in a STi, feels like an Amstrad Hi-Fi from 1979 .... tacky, cheap, awful. There are many other areas of disappointment.
I loved my Classic, it was what it was ..... the new Subaru's are not in the same league, they try to be something they are not - and end up being nothing to anyone.
Die hards will still love it, some may even bend over and pay the £33,000 - but, reality will eventually win out and the marque will die an ugly, slow, sad death. I hate to see it happen, but happen it will.
The Subaru STi - the car for the man stuck in the past .........

The Impreza has never been about interior quality.... it's about the driving experience. If you only worried about the quality of the car then you've gone wrong already with the Hoinda.... should have gone German.
And if anyone says that a Civic Diesel give the same thrills then they haven't been driving the Impreza properly..... or are trolling
£33k isn't ideal of course, but i'd assume that is down to the price of the Yen rather than IM taking the ****. (well.... maybe a bit of both)

Having just got rid of my M3 your Civic quality is just another jap sh*t box in comparison, and i have to say i do not miss any of the M3s outstanding quality because i'm having too much fun in the STi.
Honda civic... a car for a man just about living (make sure you have a funeral plan and the over 60s retirement plan i place).

Like I said ... you appear to be in denial ...
I have owned an Impreza for 10 years - I was terrified that I would miss it. I do miss the old girl, but not as much as I thought I would.
The world has moved on, I have moved on with it.
I really wanted another Impreza .... but, back to back drives with a Civic Diesel and a STi was telling. The Honda was just as much fun - more usable power if you like - and so, so, so much better built.
Add to the better car, better thrills, better power, better quality, better equipment, better price ..... you get the 55mpg, you get the £110 Road Tax, yet still keep the peerless reliability of a Subaru.
Sorry, but the argument is lost to anyone who has been out there and driven the alternatives .................................. and £33,000 would buy you a very nice Aston Martin DB7 Convertible - think about that a while.

You cant seriously be suggesting that diesel civic is as much fun an impreza. People dont by SIs for build quality, dash interior, or toys. Its a car that puts a smile on your face - simple as that.

It's not trolling at all ....... and I would love to love the new STi .... truly I would.
But is is tacky.
It is cheaply built.
It isn't the Icon it once was.
It cannot compete anymore.
It is stupidly expensive.
It loses value massively.
It costs an arm and a leg to run.
It will not sell.
The above are plain facts.
Subaru will pull out of the UK within 24 months. That is my opinion.
Maybe I'm so vocal as I'm really annoyed to see a great car die - when it could have been so much better, had they listened to what the buyers wanted.
No trolling - my honestly held opinions.

And lastly and most importantly i can't afford the insurance, tax or the actual car. So i got a boring diesel sh*t box

Lewis, I think a Honda diesel suits you just fine, theyre frugal, quiet and comfortable, in fact everything that an old man like you might want.
But back to back tests with an STi... dont make me laugh, youve never driven an STi in your life! Tell the truth now!!!

Civic...
PSL you are probably right in your conclusion...
BUT you are still about a decade behind the times..
You should have tried the Nova SX TDI back in '93
That was the car that made it clear to me that the diesel hatch was destined to rule the roost.
LOL
dunx
P.S. The "problem" with the new STI is that they are chasing a new market segment, always hard work with budget interior materials... IMHO.

I had a 57 plate Civic diesel as a company car and hated it. The handling was wooly at best. It was quirky at best, if you like the Starship Enterprise dash all well and good; me, i hated it.
My BMW 320D was a far better car all round.
But, my Type R is even better.......
