Default Number Plates

I've seen loads of cars with number plates just the length of the letters and numbers, i'm not talking about the small ones these look legal as the lettering is the normal size but the excess ends are chopped off.

Does anyone know what size they are?

even the ones with the legal size text will be Illigal if the plate isnt the national size. its stupid i know but you need a certain ammount of space around the lettering 'aparently' :/.

I had a normal sized front plate, with correct spacing and letter sizes as per "my garage"

I just took a hack saw to it to shorten it. Been through several Mots and never been stopped.

I got a tape measure and had it custom made to the size of the plate holder on the Hawkeye. The letters are UK legal.

they will make them to any size

What you must not do with your number plate...

The law states that:
You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).
That means:
No stylised letters
Don't move the space around
Don't misrepresent letters / numbers using screws or fixings
Don't misrepresent letters / numbers using squashed or distorted letters
No images other than the approved flags (no football emblems, etc)
Full details of the requirements are included in The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001

Number Plates Dimensions

As of January 2003, changes to the Law mean that all reflective acrylic number plates must conform to specific styles and dimensions, with criteria regulating decoration and extra information.

The following dimensions and regulations must be observed:

Plate and Font Dimensions:

Standard Oblong plate 524mm x 112mm
Standard Square rear plate 285mm x 203mm

Large Front plate 524mm x 112mm
Large Rear plate 533mm x 152mm

Fonts must be displayed use the Charles Wright font
and are available in standard or 3D.

Charles Wright font (per letter) 50mm x 78mm
Small letter spacing distance 11mm
Large letter spacing distance 34mm

The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer, and the name and postcode of the supplying outlet (the company who sells the number plates) must be displayed on the backing plate in the stipulated location.

Illegal plates will not be tolerated by the Police. You are not able to alter or misrepresent the letters

The following action could be taken against you in you do not adhere to the rules:

A fine of up to £1000
The registration number will be withdrawn from use
The vehicle will fail its MOT
Borders are optional and can be up to 6mm wide.

Regional and country flags (including the Euro-symbol) are optional on plates and must be on the extreme left of the display.

Regardless of size of plate, it is illegal as it has no makers marks on it. So still leaving the door open for a copper that is having a bad day.
