Default Newbie looking at Bugeye STi any advice?

After 5+ years of Evo ownership I'm going to look at a 2002 bugeye STi tomorrow, completely standard STi Prodrive at a Subaru dealer/specialist. Other than general car stuff (accident damage, rust, etc), is there anything else I should look out for?

2002 02 UK WRX STi Prodrive, 56k, FSH, completely standard, cambelt been done.

they only made 100 "Prodrive style" STi's in black

That's assuming it's a real one and not a modded Bug STi

The "Prodrive Style" was a Bug STi shipped to Prodrive and had styling mods, lights, rear wing, grille, changed clocks (I think that's it) Limited edition, especially in Mica Black.

the "PPP" is the Prodrive Performance Pack and was £1600 of exhaust / map etc., put the Bug STi at 302 PS

There is actually no such thing as a "Prodrive" but I guess they mean "Prodrive Style"

Shaun

PS there's a thread on here run by the exclusive black Bug Prodrive style, have a look it might be one of theirs

That looks like a "real" one...

Watch out for knocking rear struts, synchro problems and general tired discs & pads, clutch - ( steep hill top gear floor it ).

As with what Dunx has said, looks like a real one, normal STI exhaust so would say its the none PPP'd version (easy to check at a main dealer with the chassis code), so 262bhp.
Brake discs aint expensive if you go for after market, DONT buy from a dealer, your looking at over £600 quid for the fronts with pads if you do, less than 250 if you go after market or less than 450 if you go for a 2 piece set with good pads (pf z's, new ebc blues which seem to be getting some rave reviews etc).
Engines are pretty strong, and easily live with 400bhp daily, not much goes wrong, dunx covered the expensive bits

I'm familiar with the brake setup and how much they cost being an ex Evo owner (had an Evo4, Evo7 & Evo8MR). For some reason the same brake parts are more expensive when you say they're for an Evo.

Cheers for the advice guys, seems it being 1/100 is a bonus, better not tell the salesman that

I assumed myself all the Prodrive Style had the fuel pump/exhaust + sport Cat/ECU change as standard from Prodrive. Though mine came with non standard shocks/lights/Bumper difference/bonnet scoop/rear spoiler/quick shift/clear reflectors on front wings and all them cherry stickers only thing to say Prodrive is the Certificate and exhaust. I added my Prodrive mesh grills to mine and it also came with STi Front Strut Brace with Cherry coloured mounts though I have seen some without this maybe another cost option. One other thing I have seen some with different front grill plastic trim joining grill to light cluster.

The paint is Blue flake through the Black if it is a Style.

Check the roof at passenger side joining roof to windscreen a common rust point on Bugs I have noticed due to sometimes not very good windscreen changes or at manufacture sealing the joining edge to prevent rusting. Plus paint chips on front, chocolate paint and chips easy to undercoat and common to see peppered bonnet.

Looks like yours had the bits added after purchase, the handling pack was about 6 months behind the release of the MY02 STI type UK as they were still testing it, the scoop would be after market if its the later MY03 one, lights may be the morettes, optional extra, PPP was an optional extra for all the MY02 cars, that added the uprated fuel pump and exhaust (the fuel pump was not needed on the later cars as they had better pumps out of the factory.
The Prodrive version came with the uprated factory body kit, that was the only real difference between the models (the other non-prodrive cars looked very similar to the wrx in style with a small boot spoiler and lack of body kit).

The paint is Blue flake through the Black if it is a Style.
Black/Blue Mica, didnt matter if it was a Prodrive style or not, only came in 3 colours (black/blue mica, blue mica and silver)

Yup, rust isnt very common though on these, mainly as you say, bad windscreen replacements, paint chips are common, but then so are the speeds that things chip it that these cars do

Hi, I have an 02 wrx sti uk prodrive with ppp,,,apart from tha usual, pads, service, cam belt etc, the only thing that had to be replaced is the common rear strut fault & drop links, apart from that it has been really reliable, i have owned the car for bout 5yrs, it had 18k miles on it when i bought it & it now has 50k...

its in the WRBlue colour, not only does it say Prodrive on my logbook but i also have a PPP cert with it.....

i must say i have never ever been bored drivin it & it puts a smile on my face every time i get in it....

Hi again, I have just been looking at the photos & i may b wrong but the back box looks like the sti one not the prodrive one,,,the sti im sure has a slight slash to it where as the prodrive is straight,, like i said i may be wrong, so it maybe the prodrive style with out the PPP pack, check the documents to see if there is a PPP cert.

Also im sure if u put the reg in2 an insurance quote web site, it will tell u if it has the PPP pack reg on it...

good luck

shaun...

Good luck with the motor im joining the fold soon too but trying to hold out for a blob sti.

Question for you guys in the know though regarding bug sti's. Spoilers? I know some had the low level type but were there 2 types of high level spoilers? Seen a few witht eh brake light at the bottom of the wing where it meets the boot and then a few which look adjustable with the brake light on the top part?

Are these both standard and wondered why there were 2?

Sorry to the OP for jumping in his thread!!

Thanking you

I have had my blue/black bug sti a week now too. Love it. Just done discs and pads all around. Godspeed 2 piece front and Braketech rear with Blues. Just watch out for thread stripping on calipers as I found out yesterday Helicoiled them today and cannot wait to drive it tonight. They do seem to get alot of looks in blue black

The OEM bug / blob / hawk high level spoiler has the brake light next to the bootlid. Anywhere else and it's a copy

my main advice would be take your time. Only had mine a week or so but I spent 2 months searching and I test drove at least 5. I have the 2002 bugeye STI prodrive style with the high level spoiler (with brake light on bootlid). Its mostly standard and I love it!!

One I tried was down as standard but had extra stuff all over it, another claimed 67k and I found out it had 89k at MOT April 2010 (I hate people who clock cars!!!), another needed new pads and discs all round and no cambelt change despite doing 70k. If you take your time and ask lots of questions im sure you will find a good one.

The Blue/Black Prodrive Style were limited to 100 check out this thread

It was pi$$ing down all day yesterday so I didn't really give it much stick. Few things I did notice though, the steering is not as sharp as an Evo and the seats aren't as comfortable. It's a lot more spacious inside as the dash and door cards are chunkier in an Evo. Not as responsive and a lot more refined but then I'm comparing to my most recent Evo, 8 MR FQ-340, which isn't a fair comparison.

Soo far, it's put a smile back on my face and exceeded my expectations. I've been scooby doo'd
