Default Basic tuning advice

Well I have had my impreza for 10 days, have done over 1000 miles and used £200 of fuel, what a great car, wish I'd bought one years ago, now I'm getting used to the performance I would like a little more, I don't want a noisy exhaust or a dump valve, how can I get a little more oomph without breaking the bank? I'm thinking £ 500 ish budget, what sort of increase could I expect?my car is a 2000v reg uk turbo, any advice will be much appreciated

An exhaust is your best bet, then with the change that will go to your insurance co for the modifications done to your car.
If you really want more power then I would look at the brakes first 650 quid gets you some k sports but you need 17 inch wheels to fit these under.

I'm thinking along those lines, possibly a custom exhaust with standard looking tailpipes, I've read reports of an extra 10 bhp from just an exhaust, is this possible? I will be upgrading the discs and pads, but not going for bigger wheels, the ride and handling are so good on the standard 16" alloys that I wouldn't want to ruin it, how is the boost controlled? Is it possible to raise the boost slightly?

What he said ^^^^

Decat exhaust (standard looking = Revolution....??), Hi-Flow Panel filter and a remap and you will notice a big difference.

For remapping there are some top guys on here, Duncan @ Dynamix and Simon @ Jolly Green Monster seem to come highly recommended and I wouldn't doubt their abilities for one second going by what I've heard from guys they have done work for!!

I would have thought some idea of mileage would be a good before suggesting mods for the car

Good point, miles...... 130k, sounds alot but most of it was done b4 it's first mot, it has only done 45k since 2003 with full history and all nots to back it up. If I could get it to 230 or 240 bhp without changing the exhaust I'd be happy at that, I like the way it drives now, It always seems to have power, I drove an import sti before I bought this one, performance wise it was great on full throttle but really jerky coming on and off the power, that's the last thing I want, I was under the impression you could only remap newer imprezas, is it possible on my 2000 reg car?

For remap are two ways:EcuTek cost 600£ and Open source mapping is just 350£,which give its same power 270-280BHP.
But recommend you as above, buy full decat exhaust(try here on SN For sale section),good panel filter(Green are good,K&N are also very good).

as above,

decat from turbo to mid section,

metal y pipe on the back of your intercooler,

stainless middle section mated to a prodrive rear silencer keeping things standard but boosting performance,

then green panel filter in your airbox

then fresh remap

you should be happy with the above, its better just to find one tuner who will do these mods for you and then map straight after all in a day

Had a feeling the open source mapping was only on the new age cars rather than the my99-00 cars

Best place to start is air filter and exhaust if you're getting the gases in and out faster you'll get more power simples!
