Default help please!!!

my mate has a subaru p1,last week he was driving (off boost) doing around 30mph,suddenly his car cut off i went down with my recovery truck and took it outside his house...
it doesnt start or even try to crank over,i tried hitting the starter motor to see if its stuck but nothing.(wouldnt think starter would have anything to do with it while he was driving) he said the tappets went louder before it cut off

could this be a timing belt tensioner stuck as its not even trying to crank?
any input or help would be greatly apprecciated..

i know its asking abit much but could you email him on : shabaz_ali09@hotmail.co.uk
as im not on the comp all the time, but i will let him know what ever feedback i get on here aswell,
many thanks in advance

Does it still have charge in the battery?

A dodgy battery or alternator would cause the battery to run out of charge and then run a very low spark (prob sound louder as would be retarded timing) until eventually no spark, and cut out completely.

To try and get the starter to unlock if put it in gear and rock the car forward and backwards with the handbrake off.

Just a couple of ideas?

i guess you've checked the oil level as if the tappets went noisey it could be low and seized?
or the oil pump is shafted?

Was it actually the tappets making the noise or was it the engine detting?
These faults are just so hard to do over the internet, it could be the fuel pump has failed, it could be something has seized, we dont know, he needs to take it to a speciallist or dealer who can diagnose the fault, all the rest is speculation.
Squeaking shocks, not a problem, none starting car.....

he gave me a useless understanding of what happened lol, told me the tappets were kind of loud(probably meant detting) however i have just rang him and he said when the local mechanic came and rocked car back and forward in gear and turned the ignition,it tried to fire up...im now thinking its fuel pump as mentioned but never know.could be anything like you've said
