i recently saw some videos on youtube of 'ricers'

apparently it is an american thing and it stands for 'race inspired cosmetic enhancement'

it is a popular term used to describe people who modify thier cars badly with all of the stick on parts that you can buy from the US equivalent of halfords, i suppose we would call them boy racers.

"Rice Rocket" and "Rice Racer" where also American terms for "Jap Cars" not built in the homeland of the V8 and where seen as not very "homey".

 

+1 I've always heard the term "Ricer" as a twist on Rice rocket or Jap car

 

I believe it is a term used in a derogitory way. A bit like BarryBoys and cars that have ram-raided Halfords.

 

As N scooby has said, normally a Honda driver as they have VTEC yo ,have a quick look on NASIOC.

 

Yeah it's more an American derogatory terms for modified Jap cars and especially for badly modified ones i.e massive spoilers and loud paint jobs etc.

Also used in Australia quite a bit.

America and Australia both have a strong local V8 culture which is kind of a polar opposite to Jap turbo cars.

In the UK we don't have that local car culture really.

When I was in Australia, Imprezas (or Rexs as the like to call them there) were kind in their own catagory compared to 'ricers' such as Skyline, Supras, Soarers etc. Skyline owners and Rex owners never seemed to 'get on'.

Then you had Honda hatches in their own little 'V-Tec' catagory and they were scorned by everyone.

Hot Hatches are not that big in Oz, the equivilant of our 'boy racers' (hoons) drive big V8's instead, or cars like Skylines. Not sure why, probably cheaper insurance and petrol. The 'V-tec'ers' tended to be Asians as well for some reason.

Plenty of this sort of thing goes on in the USA. Race inspired cosmetic enhancement is true, but its usually applied to Eastern cars where Rice is a staplefood as well- ie hondas with bodykits.

But its not only Hondas- its become a term that has been given to most Japanese cars from the same V8 Muscle-car fanboys who see them as a threat. Subarus, Evos, supras, skylines etc are often called ricer/rice burner/ rice rocket as they're seen as marketing threats to "domestic" US offerings such as Mustangs, camaros, Chargers etc...

As Dwight (old-school muscle car driver) in Fast and Furious 4 said about O'conner's Skyline, "The Ricer wants to see what Dwight's got." and also "Muscle beats Imports everytime, EVERYTIME!"

I have only recently saw it on youtube and presumed it is a derogatory term for jap cars as the Japanese eat alot of rice. Or so I am led to believe.

I guess by the same token American cars should be called hamburgers

 

If you read Eric Hsu's blog (he's the Cosworth product dev manager in the US), "Beyond the Dyno", he assisted in setup of a Australian time attack Evo, a V8 car team shared the garage for a while, and had the same condescending attitude to Jap cars.

I think the winning car (another Evo) beat the previous track record held by a V8.

I actually think the term is funny, as long as calling it that doesn't turn my STI into a bowl of basmati, I don't care.

i think it may have originally been a referral to rice eating originally, it is now 'race influenced cosmetic enhancement'
