To remap or not to remap?
Hi all,
Just bought a 99V Sti version 6 import.
The guy has run it on Shell V Power all the time its been in the uk, but it hasnt been remapped.
I thought all Jap imports needed a remap for UK fuel but the previous owner who has taken really good care of the car it appears, says the version 6 is ok without??
Regards

OKay, any idea how much that will cost me and does anyone know who will be my best bet. I live near Boston, Lincolnshire on the East Coast. Can I just take it to a race specialist? Theres a guy called Andy Waters who has a garage about 25 miles away. Hes a track prep/engine rebuild specialist with a rolling road but does it have to be someone that has specific Scooby experience/specialist kit?

surely if you run the car hard on 99ron fuel and the car is setup to take 100ron fuel then that is bit risky. My car is mapped for 97ron fuel but i always put in 98 or 99ron. probably more apt when on the track. I don't think fuel additives is a good long term plan either, is it? 97 is also good for ease of access as it can be got at at most petrol stations around the country so good when on long journeys.
As for mapping you would ave to travel. Everyone has their own 'idol' when it comes to this. I think you should be able to get an ECUTEK map with that car. You pay about 650 quid all in. some of this is for the purchse of the software used and the rest is for the mappers magic touch. I would pick mappers carefully in th past few years lots have sprung up as there is obviously a profit in it, but only a handful of proper 'gurus' remain.
Andy Forest is in Scotland somewhere.
Bob Rawle 'BRDevelopments is in Swindon and will map the car on the road with you driving which is lots of fun.
There are a number of others down south, try postig a thread in a local forum on here and see where people go near you.

Hmmm, I think im actually more confused now :S
Does it make a difference how I want to use the car?
Tbh I just want it as a nice car to drive, not necessarily fast, but i will probably open it up on overtakes etc when im more used to the car. In the future I will probably consider track days but no immediate plans for that and no immediate plans to remove the 112mph restrictor.
Ive got no probs filling up on V-power all the time, but at the same time I will prob be driving 10k a year and plan to keep her 2 years or so, so if theres a long-term benefit from a remap I would rather spend the money now than damage the car.

If it was my V6, I'd get it mapped to UK fuel for piece of mind.
As JGM said to Pete, it's currently at the edge of it's happy envelope on UK V-power, but one bad batch or a bit too much heat soak and it could be operating outside the happy zone...then it's just a countdown to possible failure
and certainly if you are thinking of track days in a few months

It has a mappable ECU in it anyway so I would do it.......keep it running on V-power/99RON and get it remapped anyway. You will be mapping in a more effiecient map:
Smoother engine running, safer engine running, and this will also unleash some extra power and torque. As said- piece of mind and increased driving pleasure....can't lose.
I had my P1 mapped to 99RON fuel and aswell as feeling a lot safer it has had a huge improvement on the cars responsiveness, and in-gear torque. You won't regret it if you do

The JDM STis were mapped to run on 105 octane fuel because premium fuel in Japan was 105 octane at the time. To run them even on 98 or 99 octane v-power without a re-map is still kinda unsafe. The previous owner may not have been running the car extremely hard and may have gotten away with it, you may not be as lucky. A re-map would be good for a bit extra performance, more safety and most of all peace of mind.

If it were mine i would get it mapped as soon as you can for the said reasons above. Also i would not buy a JDM without having been mapped for UK fuel, i did last year and this gave me ground to get £700 off the price of the car due to mapping costs and a few bits that needed changing.
If you are planning track days its a no brainer, my choice of mapper would be JGM before any other, some of the mappers on here only offer OS remaps which cant be used on the MY99/00 cars yet.
Oh and dont worry about Mr Lewis, he is anti modification and makes us all aware of that lol.

I would get a tuner to have a listen with their det cans first. This will tell you if the Shell V-power has been doing any damage in the past. If it is knocking then get a re-map. You could even think about fitting a knock-link if you are a bit paranoid about a dodgy batch of fuel in the future.
