Thats not a brilliant description Steve, but its possible that its an STI... (which most early cars described as such arent).
Had it been a 240PS WRX Id have suggested a later 260PS Z4 ECU and a decat downpipe, but this is a little more complicated.
Id probably go for the decat (pre-August 1995 cars dont take a cat MOT emissions test) and an ESL live re-mappable ECU upgrade. Id keep your unique ECU safe and use an old and cheap early UK ECU for the upgrade, which will have the required socket ready fitted.
The characters will be Japanese (!), although theyre based on Chinese ideograms originally. Written in English, should be the production number (or 100 or of 200) and the month in which it was built. This should be a plate btw, not a sticker, and itll be on the near side inner wing top.
If it is a WRX then the above also applies too - with the STI there isnt a cheaper option though.

The applied model number is that of a standard WRX, but thats because they were converted WRXs. Yours is an early car, as its one of /100. Does it mention a month, or just the Acropolis win. If no month then thats a question answered for me, as every other months production has the month on the plate along with the of 100 or later of 200 build number.
With it being an STI Id find a UK ECU and go down the re-mappable ESL route, with a decat downpipe for good measure - seeing as you dont have to pass a cat test on a 1994 car.

Oh no you dont. Its all August 1995 onwards cars. Either get a better test station or tell the testers to look in their manual. Theres an idiot-proof flow chart which tells them clearly which cars do and do not have to pass a cat test.
